Dear fellow members of Catholic Answers,

Please offer your prayers! The other day my friend was acting a little off. He was a bit more moody than usual, and he’s usually a really happy-go-lucky guy. Later in the day he took me aside and informed me that a good friend of his committed suicide! I was shocked and saddened, for I did not expect it to be something that severe causing his behavior.

The friend he was speaking of lives many states away, so I know nothing about her nor if she even believed in God. I just ask that you pray that God may have mercy on her soul no matter what the situation was.

I also ask that you pray that my friend has the strength to deal with his grief, and that it does not turn him to being upset with God. He is just starting on his faith journey, and thus I hope he has the strength to ask God for help and comfort in the situation.

Especially pray for the girl though!! Please, please, please!!!

Our Father, Who art in heaven
Hallowed be Thy Name;
Thy kingdom come,
Thy will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
and forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
Amen.

Hail Mary, full of grace.
The Lord is with thee.
Blessed art thou amongst women,
and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
Holy Mary, Mother of God,
pray for us sinners,
now and at the hour of our death.
Amen.

Glory be to the Father,
and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
As it was in the beginning,
is now,
and ever shall be,
world without end.
Amen.

Lord Jesus, You said, “I have come to set the captives free.” We are captive and need Your healing touch. Free us, Lord, from our addictions, so that we will be:
free from the cares and worries that stifle our happiness;

free from sins that cling to us, and to which we cling;

free from all compulsive behavior that prevents us from becoming what you, Lord, have planned for us. Bring us, loving Savior, to the experience of abundant life, which You promised.

Saint Michael, the archangel, defend us in battle, be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the devil, may God rebuke him, we humbly pray. And do you, O’ Prince of the Heavenly host, by the power of God thrust into Hell Satan and all the other evil spirits who prowl about the world for the ruin of souls.

Amen.

**Prayer for the grieving **

Father of all mercies and God of consolation, You love us eternally and transform the shadows of death into the dawn of life. Look upon ConfirmedAgnes’ friend’s grief; be his refuge and comfort so that his sadness and sorrow may turn into the light and peace of Your Presence. In dying, Your Son destroyed death; in rising, He restored life. Grant that at the end of our earthly pilgrimage we may be found in His company with our brothers and sisters. There, You shall wipe away every tear. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Prayers for those who have died
Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.

Merciful God please flood this girl’s soul with Your love at her moment of death.

Loving God please flow healing, faith, and consolation into the hearts and minds of her friends and family.

Your friend may not know the Church’s teaching regarding suicide. I have ‘bolded’ the lines from the Catechism of the Catholic Church that can give hope.
His friend’s suicide is not God’s doing nor should He be blamed. We make our own human choices with our personal free will.

'Suicide

2280 Everyone is responsible for his life before God who has given it to him. It is God who remains the sovereign Master of life. We are obliged to accept life gratefully and preserve it for his honor and the salvation of our souls. We are stewards, not owners, of the life God has entrusted to us. It is not ours to dispose of.

2281 Suicide contradicts the natural inclination of the human being to preserve and perpetuate his life. It is gravely contrary to the just love of self. It likewise offends love of neighbor because it unjustly breaks the ties of solidarity with family, nation, and other human societies to which we continue to have obligations. Suicide is contrary to love for the living God.

2282 If suicide is committed with the intention of setting an example, especially to the young, it also takes on the gravity of scandal. Voluntary co-operation in suicide is contrary to the moral law.

**Grave psychological disturbances, anguish, or grave fear of hardship, suffering, or torture can diminish the responsibility of the one committing suicide.

2283 We should not despair of the eternal salvation of persons who have taken their own lives. By ways known to him alone, God can provide the opportunity for salutary repentance. The Church prays for persons who have taken their own lives’**

Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help, or sought thy intercession, was left unaided.
Inspired by this confidence, I fly unto thee, O Virgin of virgins, my Mother. To thee do I come, before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in thy mercy, hear and answer me. Amen
