What are some traditional prayers said when washing the hands or taking a shower? I am only talking about non-liturgical, personal, prayer.

I would be shocked if there are prayers traditionally associated with washing the hands or taking a shower.

Which isn’t to say you can’t pray in the shower, but I doubt there are any particular prayers specifically for the shower. Seems pretty insanely specific to me.

Well, perhaps to borrow from the mass one could say “Lord, wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sins.”

Edit: sorry. I see you was looking for non-liturgical .

I guess we can never say never as I’m always surprised at the different prayers that are out there. But I have never come across specific prayers for these two things.

I do often pray at these times, though. Usually, I recall my Baptism since water is involved. I’ll pray for cleansing of sin, strengthening of baptismal graces, etc.

I do think it’s good to try to associate prayer with these everyday things that we do. That way, every time you go to wash your hands, your mind is drawn to God. You might even try to think of a regular intention that you can associate with different activities. Like, every time you pour cereal into a bowl at breakfast, you pray for your sibling who fell away from the faith (just an example).

I almost always wash my hands (at least) when possible before praying. I understand this is not required, but it is related to my OCD/scrupulosity.

I pray every time I have five minutes to myself to step in the shower. My prayer usually goes, “Dear Lord, please make it ten.”

There was an attempt to get people to wash their hands longer by singing Happy Birthday. So I thought of praying Hail Mary instead 🙂

The idea of having a prayer for hand washing is not really that odd; the Jews pray: Blessed are you, L‑rd our G‑d, King of the universe, who has sanctified us with His commandments, and commanded us concerning the washing of the hands.

apparently after they finish washing their hands, and maybe only once a day (in the morning).

Because a Franciscan Prieston Youtube talkez about him saying such a prayer as a nice practice. I dont rember the prayer but I think it was taken from psalm 50

It is nin-liturgy when you offer your restroom visit to the Lord. You are to offer all your actions to Christ eg restroom.visit or making breakfast

There are no specific prayers for handwashing or performing bodily functions in the bathroom (if that’s what your asking).

At the beginning of my shift, when I’m scrubbing in, I’ll say the Prayer Of St Francis.
It focuses my mind and helps me transition into work mode.

Our elder brothers in faith (that’s how JPII referred to the Jewish people) say a blessing before washing their hands before eating.

Additionally, one of the vesting prayers that clerics say is when we wash our hands before putting on the amice.

There aren’t any traditional rote prayers for washing hands or taking a shower. That exists in Jewish tradition, but we don’t have that. Consider this:

“Rejoice always. Pray without ceasing. In all circumstances give thanks, for this is the will of God for you in Christ Jesus.” 1 Thes. 5:16-18

“Rejoice in the Lord always. I shall say it again: rejoice! Your kindness should be known to all. The Lord is near. Have no anxiety at all, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, make your requests known to God. Then the peace of God that surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.” Phil. 4:4-7

When I was a runner, there was a point in the race at which I had been trained to habitually “check down” that I was relaxed and in good form, prior to the stretch. It was just something we did every time we came around to particular points of the track during practice, so that in a race it would be automatic.

Life is busy now, and even when it is not busy it is easy to get absorbed in our own little projects. It is hard to remember to pray always or to rejoice. If washing seems to you to be a time to pray, perhaps you are primed to make washing a habitual trigger for checking for anxiety and making a request to God to hand it over to him. Once that is done (or if you aren’t anxious) then give thanks and rejoice.

Our sins are not washed away by water but by the Holy Spirit. We are not batized by water but by Him, the Holy Spirit. The water washing our body is just our daily hygiene.

That is true, it just offers an opportunity to remind ourselves of these things.

Interesting you should ask! Many years ago, I came across a site that had a list of interesting traditions Catholics used to practice (and still should!), such as crossing themselves when walking/driving past a Catholic Church in honor/recognition of the True Presence, etc. On this site, it said there is, in fact, a tradition (or used to be at least) where Catholics would pray the Hail Mary each time they washed their hands. I could never find the site again, and am not sure during what time or place these were practiced, but I have taken up this tradition of praying the Hail Mary each time I wash my hands. Hope this helps!
