I was wondering if there is a prayer that is said when putting on a crucifix necklace. In Judaism, there is a “blessing” for everything, so when I wore a tallit katan with tzitzitiot as a Messianic, I recited a blessing when I put it on in the morning. Is there anything like that for Catholics when putting on a crucifix medal?

I don’t think that there’s anything specific. THere are morning offerings and a whole lot of prayers you could say when putting on your crucifix. there is a prayer for wearing the scapular.

Hello, Michael55,

For a very long time, as a priest put on the vestments
before the Mass, there were prayers that he said,
as he put them on.
I don’t even know if this practice is still in effect.

I am not aware of any specific prayer, for when
a crucifix is put on.

I appreciate your replies concerning my question about a prayer for putting on a crucifix. Coming back home to the church after 30 years as an evangelical and messianic, I am still relearning the faith that I grew up knowing. Some things have changed, but basically the Catholic Church is still the same. I am grateful for so much more involvement from the laity–especially scholars like Scott Hahn and Matthew Grodi (to name just two). And thank God for Mother Angelica, who brings the church to people that never before would have had the opportunity to learn about the Catholic faith or Jesus.

When I put mine on, I like to say, “Sed induite Dominum Jesum Christum” (Latin) which means “But put on the Lord Jesus Christ” (in English). It is from Paul’s letter to the Romans (Romans 13:14), and it reminds me that I must “clothe” myself in Christ’s spirit and virtues each day, so that others who meet me will see not me, but Christ. (Easier said than done, but we can always try!)

don’t know why not
there is a prayer, or used to be, for every article the priest puts on while vesting for Mass, and I believe for the parts of a habit when a monk or nun was being consecrated. When I put on my Benedictine cross I say the verse we recited at our oblation,

I have been crucified with Christ it is now, no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me.

In the Byzantine tradition, when a Priest or Bishop puts on his pectoral crucifix, he says, "The Lord said, ‘If any will come after Me, let him deny himself, take up his cross and follow Me.’"
