Prayers

During the Mass, my priest asks if there are any other prayers or intentions that anyone would like to add…
I do not wish to offend the Catholic faith, but I’m new to it, although I was baptized RC, I was not raised in any religion.
My question…
I rarely say any prayers out loud, for fear of saying the wrong thing…
so this one time I said out loud…A prayer for the unity of all CHristians…
was this a no-no? I havent asked the priest yet, as he is away on holidays for a month?

Please help me out here.

The priest does this during the Mass? He asks for prayer intentions? This isn’t what’s supposed to be done. From what you’ve described, it sort of sounds like it may be his own innovation and such things are very much to be frowned upon. Priests have rubrics to follow from the GIRM, (General Instruction for the Roman Missal). In general, there’s no dialogue that’s to be going on between the priest and the lay people during the Holy Mass. Perhaps occasionally priests will ask the lay people questions or otherwise dialog a bit during the homily, but not during the Prayer of the Faithful.

But that said, Christian Unity is very a good thing to pray for. Our Lord prayed that we might all be one on the night before He died.

Prayer for Christian unity is one of the main things we should be beseeching God for. However, we do not wish for a colourless Christianity where we become Protestants and accept the bare minimum for the sake of not offending others. We should pray that non-Catholic Christians will enter Christ’s Church.

Thanks for the answers. Also, perhaps I dont yet know what Mass is…is it the whole service including communion…because if not, then mabe the priest is not doing anything wrong… By the way…the Bishop does this too.
Ps having gone to Protestant churches starting in my twenties…I do not find that there is a bare minimum…but I have found that my experience in the Catholic church has profoundly affected my experience in the Protestant church I regularly attend…Yes …I go to both and find I get all my needs met that way…
hard to explain…I think its a topic for another thread.

That was perfectly OK to do. At the end of the prayers of the faithful, which follows the gospel or homily at daily mass (on Sundays it follows the creed), some priests will ask the congregation for any additional prayer intentions. If they do so, you may speak out. The unity of all Christians is a worthy prayer. Jesus, himself, prayed for unity.

Whether it is proper for the priest to invite additional intentions at this time is another question.
