Praying and Driving

Here is the problem. In order us to afford for my wife to stay home with the kids and not go back to work, I have to drive 1.5 hours each way. That is 3 hours in the car. I get home late in the day and spend time with the kids and my wife before going to bed. I don’t have much time or energy left by the end of the day before having to do it again.

I really enjoy praying the rosary on my drive home each day. Am I getting the full benefits from it? I say this because 100% of my mind is not focused on the Mysteries, as I have to stay aware of what is going on around me. But I feel that those hours of driving are wasted and could be used to pray.

Any thoughts?
 
I say my rosary every morning on the way to work. With an 1.5hr drive, you could probably get all 20 mysteries in… TWICE!!! I recomend perhaps getting a rosary on CD that has scripture readings as well. Might help you meditate a little better while on the road! And keep your hands free for sips of coffee between Hail Mary’s.

I always pray the rosaries while driving. Though I have to pay attention to the road, I don’t sense any less devotion of my prayer. I feel intimate with Jesus and Mary while praying in a confined box- the car. No one else is there, only me and God. Sometimes I talk out loud to Him, and I listen to what He has to say. I never turn on the radio.

Since I have been praying Rosary for so many years, I can well recite all the Bible verses for each mystery. This makes it easier for my meditation. The scene of each mystery just naturally float through my mind while saying the verses.

But they never grow old. Just the other day when I was praying the Glorious mystery, I realized for the first time how each Glorious Mystery is an exciting incident. Think about how the awe, wonder, thrill, disbelief, and puzzlement the disciples must feel when they witnessed the empty tomb.

Then they watched Jesus ascend to heaven. How would you feel if you see that happen in front of your very eyes?

Then the Pentecost, the Assumption, and the Coronation, Wow! There was one excitement after another! My spirit was elevated while thinking about all these great happenings.

Please fully utilize your driving time and turn the long commute into your blessing!

nkmeck said it very well. I spend two hours a day in the car. I say a rosary once in a while in the car but I find I am distracted b/c I have to pay attention to traffic as well. Regardless, I think it’s time well spent.
 
Ditto. And no: it’s not “recollected” nor contemplative prayer. But we gotta do what we gotta do.

I also use drive time to listen to CDs – I pass 'em around among my friends. Mostly Catholic stuff, but a good audio book now and then is good, too.

Speaking of drive time: it’s TIME!

I’ve done the ‘praying on the move’ thing too. It’s not totally ideal, but it works.

Lately I find it better, as someone suggested, to listen to other audio - series from EWTN, audiobooks (there are some fantastic Christian classics out there to be downloaded for free) and so on.

It’s easiest if you have an ipod, even if not its easy enough to download mp3s (or even other type of audio files, I can teach ya how) and burn them onto a cd if your computer has a CD burner.

I use my digital rosary. You know: pinkie, ring finger, middle finger, index finger, thumb . . .

These are all free from the Mary Foundation. I ordered a couple and they came within a week.

You know I put my rosary CD on my Ipod so I don’t have the jacket available. I can get you the information sometime this weekend, for the CD I use.

I can’t drive attentively and pray at the same time, but I can listen and pray along with a rosary or other CD. my favorite is taize, which is easy to sing along with, and is my favorite form of praise and worship music.

when I was driving longer distances this summer I also used books on tape, as I have a lot of tapes on various topics by good Catholic writers.
