I know some of the western traditions with icons, such as lighting candles before the icon, incense, and the like, but can anyone tell me how I should pray with a new icon? Do I contemplate it? Pray to the Persons whose images adorn the icon? Pray certain prayers?

I didn’t think there would be a difference between a new icon and an old icon?

Give me an example of a new icon… I apologize in advance for not understanding, and I don’t want to try and answer your question without really knowing what you are trying to get at.

Oh, I was merely reffering to an icon I just recieved and that (I believe by the state of it) is newly written. How should I pray with it for the first time?

Sorry it took me so long to get back to you on this… Obviously a new icon should be a reminder of the presence of heaven during liturgy and also serve like “family pictures,”. Anytime you pray, pray from the heart, God knows the deepest part of your soul, and when asking another saint to pray for you… Always, remember that the communion of saints is a blessing. I hope this helps.

Perhaps you need not pray at all? Just meditate and/or contemplate? I have an Orthodox icon of Jesus Christ Holy Silence, with Jesus as an obviously female angel. Hands folded across her breasts. This icon does not invite prayer at all, just stillness.

I’m not terribly familiar with icons, but I seem to recall that traditionally a newly written icon is supposed to sit on a church altar for a certain amount of time and be blessed before you put it in your home, or something to that effect? Perhaps an Eastern Catholic could elaborate…
