What do you pray while kneeling before mass? Are there specific prayers that are recommended or required?

I would recommend praying about being worthy to receive the Body and Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ and to persevere in charity and share in the communion of saints. What ever the Holy Spirit tells you. And I find this a good prayer to say:

Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of thy faithful and kindle them in the fire of thy love.

You might pray for the intentions the Mass is being said for. (It’s usually posted in the bullitin) Or you could pray for your own intentions. I always try to pray that God will prepare my ears to hear his Word.

If you “google” prayers before Mass, I am sure you will find a plethora of stuff. Find something that you like and give it a try.

Or come up with your own prayers.

This is what I do-
I pray an action of contrition that I wrote for myself.
Then I pray for all my intentions- the people I said I would pray for, the grace to overcome the “struggle of the week” prayers of gratitude, etc.

And I end with this from St. Ignatius of Loyola-
*
O Christ Jesus,
when all is darkness
and we feel our weakness
and helplessness,
give us the sense of
Your presence,
Your love,
and Your strength.
Help us to have perfect trust
in Your protecting love
and strengthening power,
so that nothing may
frighten or worry us,
for, living close to You,
we shall see Your hand,
Your purpose, Your will
through all things.
Find what works for you! The best advice I ever received was
“Pray as you can, not as you can’t!. What matters is that you pray!” 😃

What do you pray while kneeling before mass?
I thank God that He gave me the chance to attend Mass. I pray for the continued good health and safety of my living family and for the eternal repose of my family who’ve passed. I pray for the conversion of my husband, and I thank St. Joseph the Worker for his intersession in keeping my husband employed and able to support his children. And finally I just ask God to continue to put me to His best use on this Earth. 🙂

I would suggest to buy a missal, that contains many prayers for various occasions, such as:
  • Preperation for Confession
  • Instructions for Confession and Examination of Conscience
  • Prayers after Confession
  • Devotions for Holy Communion
  • Prayers after Holy Communion
  • Prayers of preparation for Holy Mass
  • Prayers of thanksgiving after Mass
  • Various Litanies
  • The Holy Rosary
  • Morning Prayers
  • Evening Prayers
  • And much much more

God Bless.

My favorite is the prayer of St. Ambrose.

Lord Jesus Christ,
I approach your banquet table in fear and trembling,
for I am a sinner,
and dare not rely on my own worth,
but only on your goodness and mercy.
I am defiled by many sins in body and soul,
and by my unguarded thoughts and words.
Gracious God of majesty and awe,
I seek your protection,
I look for your healing.
Poor troubled sinner that I am,
I appeal to you, the fountain of all mercy.
I cannot bear your judgment,
but I trust in your salvation.
Lord, I show my wounds to you and uncover my shame before you.
I know my sins are many and great,
and they fill me with fear,
but I hope in your mercies,
for they cannot be numbered.
Lord Jesus Christ, eternal king, God and man,
crucified for mankind,
look upon me with mercy and hear my prayer,
for I trust in you.
Have mercy on me,
full of sorrow and sin,
for the depth of your compassion never ends.
Praise to you, saving sacrfice,
offered on the wood of the cross for me and for all mankind.
Praise to the noble and precious blood,
flowing from the wounds of the my crucified Lord Jesus Christ and washing away the sins of the whole world.
Remember, Lord your creature,
whom you have redeemed with your blood;
I repent my sins,
and I long to put right what I have done. Merciful Father, take away all my offenses and sins;
purify me in body and soul,
and make me worthy to taste the holy of holies.
May your body and blood,
which I intend to receive, although I am unworthy,
be for me the remission of my sins,
the washing away of my guilt,
the end of my evil thoughts,
and the rebirth of my better instincts.
May it incite me to do the works pleasing to you and profitable to my health in body and soul,
and be a firm defense against the wiles of my enemies. Amen.
