Praying disrespectfully?

Hi there.

When I’m going to sleep to sleep I say vocal prayers in my head, but I don’t really consider them properly and often drift away .

Are these disprespectful, or is the worst case they don’t really count ? It’s just to get more prayer, if it merits anything , in addition to usual prayer

I do this all the time. My favorite ejaculation is Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, Have mercy on us. I repeat it until I fall asleep, and I would think some of these are not full of devotion. St. Teresa of Avila said that very often it is the “will” that is praying, even though the understanding and memory are out in left field. That does not make it less meritorious, since we are not able to control all of our faculties simultaneously and make them fully attentive. I always appreciated her advice on this.

My point in using ejaculations is to benefit the holy souls in purgatory. Do not fret but continue as best you can.

God bless you for your prayerful attitude as you fall asleep.

I recall the reverence with which a Franciscan priest spoke of a former Sacristan who was frail and slowly dying, mostly unconscious.
Each time someone attended him, or touched his hand, or even accidentally slightly jostled his bed, the dear holy man would mumble prayers. Though barely conscious, he had a truly prayerful spirit, evidence of a life of devout prayer.

…Not a sign of disrespect, but indicative of a prayerful soul.

I think if you have certain things you want to explicitly talk to God about in prayer, or if you have certain prayers you want to faithfully say everyday, you can make a routine of saying them in an upright position or in a position where you won’t drift off. Five prayers I say everyday are the Memorare, Guardian Angel, Eternal Rest, Golden Arrow ,and prayer to St Michael. It’s short and takes well under five minutes but I absolutely know if I did it while laying down before sleep that I wouldn’t say them consistency.

And then for anything else there’s no need to stress about drifting off or whatever. We’re suppose to be in a prayer state 24/7 so drifting off is natural at some point.

Are these disprespectful
I had a relative who thought you only did God-related things in a “respectful” environment. It’s a difficult word.

If the prayer in itself is not offensive or disrespectful, then it’s holy.

The soul reaches out to God and God to the soul, even without us noticing. It’s a longing born in eternity. Nothing wrong with little prayers or thoughts such as these. They are precious in God’s sight.

May our minds and souls be always in dialogue with God!

I’m assuming you have a prayer life outside of bedtime 🙂

Did you ever have a sleepover where you and your BFF talked and connected until you both drifted off to sleep?
Sleepy-time prayer is kinda like that.
