I was talking to a protestant and she told me she prayers for God’s justice. I was a bit shocked because I never really heard of that before. I always assumed that God’s justice will prevail in the end, even if we don’t see it until the next life. Also, I can’t help but think if someone wrongs me, I should pray for forgiveness. It seems to me that praying for God’s justice would only come from vengeful motives. What do others think?

Hi Anglewannabe,

I happen to agree with your post here:

I always assumed that God’s justice will prevail in the end, even if we don’t see it until the next life. Also, I can’t help but think if someone wrongs me, I should pray for forgiveness. It seems to me that praying for God’s justice would only come from vengeful motives.

I would not judge that remark or her attitude unless she explained it more clearly. When someone says “God’s justice,” it could be interpreted different ways.

Also it may happen that God’s justice does not work the way we expect.
For my thoughts are not your thoughts,
nor are your ways my ways, says the Lord.
For as the heavens are higher than the earth,
so are my ways higher than your ways
and my thoughts than your thoughts.
(Isaiah 55:8-9)
So if we do pray for God’s justice, we should not envision our concept of justice, but leave it in God’s hands.

Isn’t His will always for justice? "Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven".

I recall a scene in an old movie of a women’s prison. Thelma Ritter was before the Parole Board. They asked what she wanted. She replied something to the effect that she would appreciate any mercy they could give, but no more justice, she had already had enough of that.

I prefer God’s Mercy to His Justice. 😉
