Praying for Others - We Have a Job to Do

Although I’ve been familiar with indulgences and offering up prayers & sufferings for others, God has recently struck me with the incredible blessing we’ve been given. Indulgences are such a wonderful opportunity to pray for the souls of others instead of ourselves, and if we teach our children they can in turn pray for our souls. The same holds true for sufferings, prayers, good works, etc. If we offer up the entirety of them for others and not ourselves and teach our children to do the same we can cooperate deeply in Christ’s redemptive plan. So I’m really once again reminding myself today, “Get busy. You have a job to do.”

I try to pray (and live by) the Daily Offering each day, and pray that any indulgenced prayer or action I do may be applied to the souls in Purgatory, especially those who have nobody to remember them and pray for them.

Along with the many special days and devotions that Holy Mother Church gives us, esp in these lenten days, to remind us of all who pray for us and we get to pray for too , The Feast of Divine Mercy seems like one with a great emphasis on this role …each day devoted to bring a particular group of persons …to the ocean of His mercy …

Seems like the parable of the prodigal son hints on these two areas well ; the older brother probably had grown resentful of both Father and the brother ; instead , he could have taken steps at reconciliation, offering to make up for what the brother had lost , comforting the Father and compassionate towards him , even if the father seemed lost himself in his sorrow ( ? the reason for no party with the friends of the brother ) and in these steps, sharing more the joy of a closer relationship with the Father and joyfully looking forward to the return of the younger one !

May we be richly blessed , to share in the joy of going to The Father …on behalf of each of us… and may His mercy bring us all, peace and healings !.

Thank you so much, for the timely reminder. :clapping: This is a very, very good way to observe the season of Lent. We all have so many opportunities during our day… to not only suffer for the salvation of souls… but also, to pray for them. I do also, hope… that they are praying for me. I need the prayers.

It’s my understanding that when we pray for the souls in purgatory they also pray for us. And I would imagine without the distraction of worldly desires their sufferings and prayers have significant merit.

In my daily renewal of my consecretion to Mary I ask her to do what she deems best for any indulgence I get that day. I used to wonder how people could be so selfless as to apply their indulgences to the souls in Purgatory , but now I understand more about praying for others (that I don’t know) being like ripples in the water and effecting all of us.
