Does each person in purgatory have a little “purg-o-meter” (so to speak) where people who pray for that person’s prayers go until they add up to enough to spring the soul into Heaven?
It seems unfair that prayer after death could mean the difference between staying in purgatory or going to be with God. What about people who don’t have a lot of friends or family praying for their soul?
It doesn’t seem very fair that God would say, “Sorry, Buddy - you’ve got to hang out here until enough people pray for you!” I mean, don’t you have to get to Heaven on your own merit? Should I go around now making sure everyone I know prays for me a ton if/when I die? How are the prayers valued? By length? By fervency? If I spend two hours praying for a dead relative, is that better than spending 20 minutes?
I am very confused how this whole “getting someone out of purgatory” deal works. It doesn’t seem very God-like that He would allow people to be there at the mercy of free-willed people on Earth.
