I have been looking into Paul’s letters more recently, and I have noticed numerous passages mentioning how Paul is constantly praying for the people in the churches that he visits, and often mentions that as a result he greatly desires to be with the people he prays for in person.
This has struck me because I have a few close friends whom I have met on another Internet forum. One of them is an Evangelical Baptist close to my age and we have actually asked each other for prayers if something is going on in our personal lives (or even better, we’ll just pray without being asked). I have been desiring to meet with him in person, even though at this point I know that it’s near-impossible (we live about 1000 miles away from each other), and at first it distressed me because I didn’t know if this desiring was of the Lord or if it was purely my own. I still don’t know for certain, but reading those various verses from Paul has eased my distress and anytime I know that I’m really desiring what I can’t have at the moment, I give it to God and I feel at peace. I don’t know if we’ll meet for certain, but that’s OK.
I guess my question is, why is this desire in us? I know that God wants us to have interpersonal relationships and to strive for them on this Earth, but in cases where it seems near-impossible for 2 people to be with each other in person, it just seems mildly torturous.
I’m curious to see what people have to say about this subject.
