Do you pray for the souls in purgatory with your meal prayers? My family and I always have, but I never really realized no one else does that I’ve seen.

Before meals: “Bless us O Lord, and these thy gifts, which we are about to receive, from thy bountiful hands, through Christ our Lord. May the souls of the faithfully departed rest in peace. Amen.”

After meals: “We give you thanks, for all thy benefits, O mighty God, who lives, and reigns this world with no end. May the souls of the faithfully departed rest in peace. Amen.”

Does anyone else do this, or did my grandfather start a trend? 🤷

I have an aunt and uncle who do that, but only since the death of their children. My family never has, but it seems like a charitble way to remember and pray for the dead. I might actaully start doing this in my own family. 🙂

(I didn’t vote because I’m still too new to the site and I don’t have those permissions yet…I guess…it says I can’t vote.)

My family does that.

My husband and I and all our friends pray before meals:

Bless us, O Lord, and these, Thy gifts, which we are about to receive, from Thy bounty through Christ our Lord, Amen.

Eternal rest grant unto all of our dead family and friends, O Lord, and may Your perpetual light shine upon them. May they the souls of all the faithfully departed - especially those who have no one to pray for them - through Your sweet mercy Jesus, rest in peace. Amen.

Trying to get our bunch to pray after meals is difficult because often times some folks have to leave before others to get somewhere, etc. So we do all the praying up front. 😃

Cute story - my cousin’s daughter (about 10yrs old) said “Wow, you pray ALL THAT, EVERY TIME?!” I said, “Yes we do, God is very patient so He waits for us to finish.” 😃

When she does pray before meals it is - “God is great, God is good, let us thank Him for our food.”

That’s exactly what we pray before and after meals as well.

:thumbsup:I had never heard of this before. It sounds lovely and I will try to incorporate it into our family meals from now on. Thanks so much for bringing up the topic.

My wife’s family always did, and we continued it. Now much of my family has copied it from us.
