Do you prayers for the dead “count” if said by persons not in a state of grace? (pardon my ignorance)

Yes and no. We cannot merit (justly deserve) spiritual rewards for ourselves or others if God does not dwell within us in grace. The whole idea of merit come from Jesus himself when he, being the beloved son of the Father, was pleasing in every act he did , merited for us redemption, precisely because he was the Father’s BELOVED Son. And we too, in the same fashion may only merit as the Father’s BELOVED children as he sees in us his only Son by grace. So everything is based on this Father/sonship relationship as far as merit is concerned.

However prayer is always good and God always knows our prayer intentions. And tho a person not in grace cannot merit for those in purgatory, they can receive themselves gratuitous graces of conversion for themselves because of their prayers for others.

Always pray regardless of where a person may think their relationship is with God. For in the end, God may be merciful anyway…even tho not by merit.

May God our Father give you grace and peace

Don’t be so black and white…it will drive you to insanity and scrupulocity

Pray always, always seek God.

And lets all get back in the state of Grace while we are at it! 👍
