When I played football (in high school) my mom told me not to pray that we win, but that we do our best and that no one gets hurt.

I don’t know that it’s “proper”, but I don’t think it’s particularly “improper”. It’s only human to pray for things that we want. When I was a child I often used to ask God to speed up or slow down public transport so that I’d get to school on time. I don’t know whether that was “proper”, but most times it seemed that my prayers were answered!

Same as above really. Better still, why not pray for both teams? I think that’s what Jesus teaches us to do.

Do I think that your prayers would influence God to help a particular team to win? Not really. We don’t know what God thinks or how He intervenes in our lives, but I’d be surprised if He gets involved in rigging the outcome of sports matches!
God hear prayers of this type?
Yes, He hears prayers of all types.

Praying for both teams to win? Even if you are very much attached to a team( your country team, your sponsored team etc) .Why to pray at all then?

You don’t have to pray for them to win, but you can still pray for them. Perhaps like I wouldn’t pray for Nicolás Maduro to stay on as president of Venezuela, but I’d still pray for him. Although sports obviously aren’t as important as that. Basically, you’re praying that the better team wins, that everyone plays by the rules, that nobody gets injured. I don’t know about the rest as the world, but in England it’s a tradition we learn at school that at the end of the game the winning team gives three cheers for the losing team. I guess praying for both teams is just good sportsmanship.

Ok…a slight misunderstanding. My doubt was about praying for win by a team. Not about praying for a good match, for following the rules, for avoiding injury etc which are not as important as a win and for which only one usually pray. I am now feeling that it is of no use praying for win by a team except for your own mental satisfaction and to leave alone God in such matters.

God would never tell us to “leave him alone” regarding ANY sincere, decent prayer. It is fine to pray that your side wins a game, understanding that of course the other side will be making the same prayer and that God’s will be done. It would be one of those “let us win, if God wills” type of prayers.

I think God is actually happy when we include Him into our daily activities in this way.

Again, unnecessarily bringing God’s will.Would not God leave it to the best playing team to win rather than interfering in the match and making a particular team to win based on the prayers he receives. Why should we expect that God will not allow such things to go by its own way even when allowing man to go on his own way in the matter of of his salvation itself ? However these are things which require further light…

Just my personal opinion, but I really think people who have a concern about whether to pray to God or not for a win are making prayer into too big of a deal, when it should just be a normal conversation with God.

Once again, you can bring ANY prayer to God. It doesn’t have to always be some big, lofty, serious request. God is your friend, you take everything to God. You just have to accept it if he says No. If somebody is going to be angry at God because they prayed for their team to win and the team lost, then that person has a problem. But for many of us, praying for the team to do well is just a normal thing to do, like praying for God to help us do well on our job today.

Anyway, it’s your choice what you want to pray for or not, others will make their own choices.
Have a nice day

Praying for a sport’s team is fine as a way of having a friendly conversation with God.

No, it isn’t an important prayer and he won’t treat it as such, but God is never unhappy listening to you. He always works towards the ultimate good, which is a person’s holiness and eternal happiness.

Oh…let me repeat once again.I am talking about praying to God for a win by a team in a match which only we do generally and not any prayer for the welfare of the teams, for a good match, for a good climate, for the glory of God etc.If you pray for the win,God may perhaps smile and say.Ok…Ok… heard your prayer.Enjoy the match but sorry to say that I don’t interfere in such things.Still happy that you chose to pray to me for these silly things…I will remember you when you come to me with some genuine prayers which requires my interference…😀😁

There’s nothing particularly wrong about it in my opinion. Just preface it with something like, “If it is your will, allow such and such to win…” I mean, sports, done properly, are a great way of giving glory to God. While they are not the most important thing in the world, I see no reason why God wouldn’t take some interest in them. Just don’t place too much weight on the whole thing and I think you’re fine.

I think it is good to pray for the opposite team, as well as for your own.

Once, I prayed for one football team to win the Super Bowl because someone I knew who had had a really rough year was rooting for them. It really cheered them up when their team won.

Also, I agree with @Socrates92

How dare you! As Socrates, I hate it when people agree with me.

For some reason that reminds me of when I used to play softball. Before each game, my team would say the Hail Mary in Icelandic (our religion teacher, who had been a missionary in Iceland, taught it to us). I think it freaked the other team out 🤣

Pray for anything you like. God will hear, always. He may frequently smile over what we feel is necessary to be brought to His attention.

I thought this thread had to do with finding a potential spouse. Imagine my surprise. 😳
