Praying naked

Needless to say this practice is… unorthodox. (and slightly weird, IMHO).

A point which I did not see anyone else raise here is this: I don’t see anything wrong here provided your nudity is not distracting you from your prayer time.

For example, some times people will want to kneel during prayer because they think it’s more reverent (which it is). But the second their knees hit the floor the only thought in their head is “Ugh, my knees are killing me!” If it gets to that point, then stop and just sit down.

This is important. The goal during prayer is union with God, ultimately in the form of mystical contemplation. If your nudity is distracting you at all then you should just put your clothes back on. Honestly, I can’t see how it doesn’t distract you. It would for me.

St. Paul says “But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection” (1 Cor. 9:27). Ultimately when we enter into prayer we want to be at the point where all of our lower faculties quiet down. In all honesty, I believe at some point your nudity could become a big distraction for you.

I thought you were going to be asking about the book Praying Naked by Fr. Stroud. :o

I pray in the shower, but I would find it completely distracting in other circumstances. If it really helps you in your prayer life, though, more power to you.

I sometimes pray in the shower, so I see that as fine. But, I think anything else just sounds weird (unless you are praying for strength to remain chaste)
 
The only times I’ve really prayed naked is if I was having intense stomach cramps and was crying out to God, for relief from the pain. :crying:

Also if I was in the shower & thought about someone in trouble and asked the Lord to help them. No long prayers, though!

Yeah. This is another one of those “let’s see how repressed the Catholics really are” threads.

I do speak to my guardian angel in the shower every morning.
However, I’m utilizing the quiet time. I’m not doing it BECAUSE I’m naked.

Are we not taught not to do anything we would not do before God Who sees all?

Being naked is inherently immodest. Certain body parts should be covered.

Back to Genesis and Adam and Eve.
We are aware of sin.

There are a few exceptions like in my post # 27
 
I pray while showering. Making a morning offering cleanses the soul and showering washes the bod. Starts the day off right. Same can be said for taking a shower before bed. while making a daily examine!
 
What an idiotic thing to advise. It sounds like something dreamed up by a Hindu sect. Or a bunch of hippies.
 
The only room in the house where I can get any privacy is the half bath in the basement. So, I’ve been known to say rosaries on the toilet. Do what you got to do.

I don’t think praying naked is weird, where the nudity is incidental, like you’re taking a shower. What’s arguably a little weird is the OP is deliberately getting naked to pray.

I mean, I guess it’s fine…it’s just…odd.
 
How about hermit crabs?

These little guys don’t run around naked very often. They always find shells or something to curl up in.
 
For most people, unless it was part of their culture, being naked during prayer time would be a distraction and not conducive toward prayer.

In fact, it may be a device which feeds ego.

First, you have to ask yourself what is the purpose of prayer is for you ?

Is it to follow some sort of ad hoc religious ritual you’ve set up ?

Or is it to grow closer to God, dwelling within ?

Only you can discern what the motivation for prayer is.

How do you not get cold? Even in the summertime, I can’t function indoors if I’m not wearing at least a jacket and socks along with my normal clothes, so I can’t see how that wouldn’t be distracting.

Where do you live that you need to wear a jacket indoors in summer? Siberia?
 
It isn’t weird or odd. God sees everyone naked because he sees all. I remember I believe it was a saint (i have a bad memory lol) who said it does not matter how you pray as long as you do so. Don’t quote me on that but yeah praying while naked seems fine:thumbsup:
