Hi there.

I was wondering what people thought of this: I try to avoid drinking (alcohol) in general but i am not a teetotaler and in my business I do from time to time drink during dinner meetings but I usually feel a little uncomfortable praying or reading the Bible then but I was wondering if other believers think I should not say rosaries or read the Bible in these situations since I am in kind of an intoxicated state (not completely drunk but not sober, you know). (Sorry, bad editing – I’ve had the aforementioned “few”’ tonight --🙂

Just curious – thanks.

just as a matter of prudence, it is probably a lot wiser not to drink during a business meeting to the point where you do not feel confident in making a judgement such as this. of course, someone else drove you home at that time as well.

you are right but unfortunately i am not always so prudent. However, I drank in the bar at the hotel where I am staying so no drunk driving was involved – drunk driving is truly irresponsible. 🙂

Well, it seems to me that it might be a good idea to pray & read the Bible at those times…Just because, you see, I think that when you are somewhat intoxicated, seems like a time when any number of temptations might come to you…The devil working overtime when you are weakened. Prayer & Bible reading would place your heart before the Lord, & perhaps help protect you…

I can’t think of any time being a bad time to pray or read the Bible. When you’re drunk a lot of feelings can come to the surface that you might otherwise not be aware of or hide away. Prayer at these times is a way of addressing them and asking for help and guidance over such things can never be wrong.

Now speaking strictly for myself, there’s been more than one occasion in my life when I’ve taken way too much and I’m on my knees, holding onto the toilet bowl with my head wedged in. What a lesson in humility for the proud!

well it has been a long time since I have been able to drink at all, but I sometimes get buzzed by some of my medications, so maybe it is the same thing–reading the bible in that state can result in getting amazing insights, or the feeling that you have hit on the whole key to understanding major theological points. The trouble is when you sober up, you can’t remember what you read, or even if you made notes, what you wrote makes no sense in the morning. Now that has happened to me.

Reading the Bible or any other spiritual reading I guess can never be wrong at anytime but as far as trusting any insights under those conditions might be a little questionable. As for praying, I think a little prayer at that time is a good idea and maybe even a necessary action ,especially if a few turns into quite a few.
