Praying rosary daily

My girlfriend prays the rosary daily, she wants me to do it too. She had a really strict Catholic mother and I’ve only just been baptised and confirmed. My RCIA teacher never mentioned the rosary except once, when joking about it to one of the female members who’s husband was already Catholic, he told her to tell her husband to do so any rosary prayers as if like a punishment or something. So please tell me about this.
My girlfriend says it is our duty to pray rosary daily, even though she does lots of other prayers too, she just wants me to do this one.
 
The Rosary is a private devotion and it is not required or mandated in any way by the church.

The only exception would be if you joined an order or confraternity which required you to pray it, but that would be explained to you before hand.
 
Certain saints tell us that generally it is our duty (in justice) to pray 15 minutes a day. And it happens that the Rosary can be prayed in that amount of time, so it is very handy for that. (More praying is usually praying in charity.)

The Rosary also offers a very good set of things upon which to meditate, Christ’s Passion, but also the joys and glories of God.

Many saints have prayed the Rosary daily, and the Rosary is a powerful prayer with some excellent promises.

All that being said, praying the Rosary itself is not a *requirement, *the Eastern Catholic churches have other prayers like the Akathist.

A lot of people recommend starting out with one decade and working your way up. I found that praying along with a recording was extremely helpful in learning the Rosary; and that it helps me a lot of read or hear a Scriptural Rosary, and from time to time, to change which one I use, and to definitely read those sections of the Bible every so often.

Dedicating oneself to praying the Rosary also helps improve how well you pray, as I found when I prayed a 54-day Rosary Novena.

Maybe you and your girlfriend could pray the Rosary together?
 
I pray the Rosary daily as do my wife and children (ages 11, 9 and 6), the devotion has been around since about the 11th century but it’s history goes all the way back to the earliest times in the Church.

Look up a book called Champions of the Rosary. I loved it, and I have heard most people that read it love it. Also look up and read about Fatima, the Blessed Mother asks us to pray the Rosary daily.

I converted about 10 years ago but only started saying the Rosary daily about a year ago and I really wish my RCIA process had done more to teach me about it and I am very upset that I didn’t say it daily for those 9 years.

The Rosary is not required, but I find it to be one of the most effective ways to pray. You should check out what Saint Pio had to say about the Rosary. He wouldn’t even put his Rosary down to sleep.
 
The Rosary can bring great peace of mind. I highly recommend it as a personal devotion.

It doesn’t need to be said all at one sitting, space out the decades to suit your schedule.

I pray the rosary every day – the first two decades I say with my first cup of coffee – then the other decades except for the last one I say when 'm walking to Church – or to public transportation, etc. – I say the last decade before I turn out the light at night – the rosary is the only prayer that keeps me going each and every day.

The way the Church has proposed the rosary is arguably exceptional.

“The Rosary is a powerful weapon to put the demons to flight and to keep oneself from sin…If you desire peace in your hearts, in your homes, and in your country, assemble each evening to recite the Rosary. Let not even one day pass without saying it, no matter how burdened you may be with many cares and labors.” – Pope Pius XI

The other posters have already provided great information on the Rosary itself; all I have to add is this:

Be thankful that you have found such a girlfriend! The rosary is an incredibly powerful prayer, which does much to brings those who pray it to holiness. I strongly advise that you follow your girlfriend’s example, and pray it daily with her.
 
I only started praying the rosary daily last June. It was drudgery and forced in the beginning months, but now it is such a part of my life that I can’t imagine not praying every day. It’s like brushing my teeth, I would never just skip that for a day. Like most people on this thread, I say the decades spaced throughout the day.

There was a certain habitual mortal sin that I was struggling with and I had heard (I think it was one of the saints I can’t remember who) that if you commit to saying the rosary every day for one year that either you would stop praying the rosary or you would stop the habitual mortal sin. I was determined to see if this was true. And 10 months later I am here to tell you that that sin is no longer a part of my life. It truly does bring special graces! I highly recommend it.
 
A rosary a day keeps the devil away! 😃

There have been many apparitions of the Blessed Virgin Mary which have told us to pray the rosary daily. Some which have been accepted by the Church are Lourdes, Fatima, and Kibeho. Many other apparitions, which have not yet been accepted by the Church, also say the same thing, to pray the rosary daily.

It takes about 15 min. to pray one.
 
I also pray the rosary each day. It may not be required but it is a truly wonderful habit to get into. I’m sure your girlfriend wants the wonder of it for you.
I felt moved to pray the rosary. So I started out small as I didn’t want to fail at it or give up. I began by praying one decade daily for the first week and then adding another decade for 2 weeks or however long it took to become habit and then added on the third, forth and fifth. I now couldn’t possibly go a day without praying it

Perhaps you could try it now and again, say once a week or build it up like I did, like any good habit it need practice to take root. Pray on it and see what appeals to you. The fact that you are asking likely means you are interested in trying it

The Church cannot require a private devotion. That would violate free will. The devotion to the Blessed Virgin that the Church does require is fulfilled by obedience to the first precept of the Church.
 
The Rosary is optional but it’s really worth it to give it a try, you could start of with a decade and work your way from there. From my experience it is a very powerful prayer which changes your life. If I’m having a stressful day I find peace when I pray The Rosary…it is hard to explain how I feel sometimes after I pray it. The Saints have said it is the second most powerful prayer after Mass…google miracles that happened from praying the rosary you will be overwhelmed.

The Rosary has a special power against evil. Satan hates Mary with all of his might. Through Mary and her Magnificat, her “yes” to God, we have Our Lord Jesus Christ. Through Him we have our salvation, if we choose to accept it. Demons know and fear the Rosary. Blessed Pope Pius IX said, “Give me an army saying the Rosary and I will conquer the world.” This is how powerful the Rosary is. St. Francis de Sales, the great master of the spiritual life, wrote, “The greatest method of prayer is praying the Rosary.”

And of course, Our Lady of Fatima said, “Pray the Rosary daily.”
 
I grew up in a family where the rosary was a natural part of daily life. I think that is the best way to look at it, rather than a mandatory obligation in which punishment is attached if somehow it is missed. Prayer is by definition the raising of hearts and minds to God. It is communication, and not something to be checked off a to do list. Our prayers should feed us, just as we are fed when we sit down around the table together as family for supper.
Family prayer binds us closer together.

Whether prayed within the family, or by an individual, the rosary is a very powerful intercessory prayer.
