While surfing the other sites of CAF, I came upon a group that states:

**Jesus said **if we pray this prayer 1,000 souls from purgatory are released: “Eternal Father, I offer Thee the Most Precious Blood of Thy Divine Son, Jesus, in union with the masses said throughout the world today, for all the holy souls in Purgatory, for sinners everywhere, for sinners in the universal church, those in my own home and within my family. Amen.”

I searched the various sites on CAF that deal with scripture, but could not find this particular one.

If you know, please cite to me Book, Chapter and Verse.

Thanks! :tiphat:

You won’t find this in the bible, friend. I don’t know the context in which this was written, but I suspect it was a private revelation given to a saint, who wrote it down for posterity. As a private revelation, we are free to believe it or not, since it has no bearing on our salvation.

We ought not to rely on exact specifics as “1,000” souls, either. Much depends on the purity of heart in the person praying, and the will of God with regard to his justice. A single prayer offered by a saint is worth more than a heap of gold in God’s eyes than a thousand prayers offered by someone in serious sin. Do you see the difference? We strive to become so pleasing to God that he will hear and answer our prayers for others, living or dead. There is a scripture for this, “For THEM do I sanctify MYSELF, that THEY also may be sanctified in truth.” Jn. 17:19

This is the Prayer of St Gertrude. It comes from a private revelation.

I vaguely remembered reading these words from the saint who received revelations on purgatory, so when I googled her, I found the prayer you quoted. Again, it is a private revelation, and one may adopt it as a personal devotion, or not.

Gene Church,
I see that we were both posting simultaneously at 10:26. Must be the Spirit, yes? 😉

Given that I rarely post these days, it certainly must have been.

God bless.

There are heresies that are far left, and there are heresies that are far right.
Email chain letters can also be noted for this.

Private revelations of St. Faustina regarding Jesus and His great Mercy are celebrated on the Sunday after Easter. I believe this Saint, and so did Pope John Paul II after extensive investigations.

I don’t remember ever reading about “1000” souls in St. Faustina’s diary.
“Praying for the living and the Dead” is one of the “Spiritual Works of Mercy”.
Jesus’s promises to St. Faustina are amazing, and all in accord with Church teachings.

If you come across questionable statements on any web site, or blog, send a communication to the author and ask where they got their information from so you can look it up in a document put out by the Church.
Look for a Nihil Obstat, Imprimatur, or Imprimi Potest on the copywrite page of any printed information.
You can also take the Vatican web site information to the bank.

And lastly make certain that comment about printed information are not taken out of context.

The prayer quoted by the OP is the prayer taught to St. Gertrude by our Lord in a private revelation.

I pray this prayer every day adding at the end: …and for all the Priests and Religious in Purgatory. Amen.

According to the prayer card I have this was given approval and recommendation by M. Cardinal Pahiarca, Lisbon, Portugal,
March 4, 1936; but, as with all private revelations, it is for us to believe and/or not to believe.

There is a great similarity between this prayer of St. Gertrude and the prayer of St. Faustina, and this should surprise no one since both are intended to keep one in sight of the one efficacious Sacrifice. I combine the two and offer myself through, with, and in Him in union with the Holy Sacrifice wherever it is now being offered. I have no idea how many souls are released form purgatory thereby, nor does it matter to me. What matters is that I do whatever good I can for them.

What a beautiful sentiment! 👍

Thanks for the clarification. I was on a group site in the CAF website, and a member by the name “eternalcorn” started the thread. He didn’t mention anything about saints so it led me to believe that this was a false statement on his part contributing somethng to Jesus that wasn’t so. I’m not so sure I can accept the concept of purgatory or of a private revelation. I believe what I read that we shall be judged by our words and deeds. Even Abraham told the rich man who was being tormented that a messenger would not be sent to his brothers to warn them of the place (Hades) he was in. Abraham told him that they do not believe Moses and the prophets, why should they believe a messenger? Death is final until the resurrection. You can’t play a mulligan or get a do over after you die. You have to prepare yourself to be holy (pure) for the enjoyment of Paradise and eternal life in Heaven. 👍

You definitely have a false idea of what Purgatory is… I would have a hard time accepting purgatory if the way you understand it was actually what was taught too.

Purgatory is not a do-over it’s actually a cleansing process (purging out of the sin attachments we have died with) for souls before they are to cross over into Heaven. Souls that are destined for hell don’t go to purgatory but souls destined for heaven need to be pure before seeing God. “Nothing unclean can enter Heaven” kinda thing.

I thought I’d just indicate one scriptural passage that almost certainly evidences purgatory: Rev. 7:9-14. The vast multitude which no man can number went through the time of testing and then (notice that they themselves did the washing) washed their soiled robes in the Blood of the Lamb, a great description of purgatory, a place of cleansing.

:tiphat: Interesting. I always thought that when you wash your robe in the blood of the Lamb, that means you are baptized into the death of Christ to arise a new man. In Revelation, one-third of mankind was killed by plagues. Those who survived would not repent of their sins. The Bible teaches us that in the last day, every knee shall bow to God. Submission is an important part of salvation, next you need to confess Christ and be baptized. Only through baptism can the soul truly be cleansed and ready for Heaven. 👍

According to the scripture, there is a conscious effort to apply the Blood of Christ to one’s garment if one has soiled it. We put on Christ at baptism, but if we soil the new garment, we must cleanse it in His blood before we can claim our inheritance from our Father (because nothing impure can come into God’s presence). If this was not suifficietly done during our time of tribulation, it must still be done, and it is we who must do the waashing.
