I assisted at a Mass celebrated by a priest from the SSPX for about 7 years prior to my wedding in Aug. 2008.

Since then I’ve been going to a diocesan NO Mass celebrated by a conservative/traditional priest who celebrates a weekly TLM (Wed evening) and a once-a-month Sat vigil TLM - so he’s about as traditional as one can get.

Still, his celebration of the NO Mass is pretty hard to take after assisting at a weekly High Mass for all these years. Decided several months ago to bring my 1962 Missal to the NO Mass and just pray the TLM. I follow the prayers and gestures in the Missal and try as best as I can to ignore what’s going on around me. Only time I really pay attention is during the sermon.

Since the sign of peace is optional, I don’t participate in that either. Actually never did even prior to praying out of the Missal.

So for those of you Catholics who are in a similar predicament, I would recommend this course of action to minimize the aggravation of having to assist at a NO Mass.

This doesn’t sound like what I would recommend. Praying from the 1962 Missal - fine, beautiful prayers, and nothing wrong with that missal. Ignoring what’s going on around you - well, I hope you mean ignoring illicit practices and/or distracting and irreverent actions by parishioners. Because if you are ignoring the real Holy Sacrifice of the Mass going on around you, in favor of reading prayers from a book, that’s a problem. It sounds like you pay attention to the sermon but not the consecration? I hope I’ve misunderstood you.

About the only part of the NO Mass I ‘observe’ is the consecration. Otherwise I’m reading the prayers in the Missal. I pretty much keep pace with the priest but I do have to play catch-up at the beginning of the Mass because the prayers at the foot of the altar were eliminated in the NO missal.

I find myself doing a similar thing sometimes… I’ll sort of whisper “Et cum spirituo tuo,” sometimes if I feel down or upset by what’s going on around me. I don’t know about keeping your nose in the book the entire time though… it might border on ignoring or missing parts of the Mass. If you have very tight control over your mind then it is very possible to get the same spiritual fulfilment out of the Novus Ordo as the TLM, but it takes a lot of effort! Perhaps memorize some parts so you don’t have to be so removed, and just keep your eyes down on the crucifix in your palm or something like that rather than look up, but don’t remove yourself…

A Layman cannot “pray” the Mass.
Actually a great Saint called us to do so 🙂 Right there in my missal.
Code:
"Don't pray at Holy Mass, but pray the Holy Mass."
“The Holy Mass is a prayer itself, even the highest prayer that exists. It is the Sacrifice, dedicated by our Redeemer at the Cross, and repeated every day on the altar. If you wish to hear Mass as it should be heard, you must follow with eye, heart and mouth all that happens at the altar. Further, you must pray with the priest the holy words said by him in the Name of Christ and which Christ says by him. You have to associate your heart with the holy feelings which are contained in these words and in this manner you ought to follow all that happens at the altar. When acting in this way, you have prayed Holy Mass.”

Pope Saint Pius X

I don’t understand this. Are you saying you left the TLM for the NO?

A couple of years ago I decided to try singing in the choir at a local a fairly reverent NO parish. As usual the NO prayers tended to really irritate me so I brought my TLM missal and would try what you have suggested. Up in the choir loft I thought I would be fine but I could not concentrate what with all the activities down below. So I gave up and found an EF Rite that was only 120 miles each way.

You don’t say why you stopped assisting at the TLM. Is it that you can’t get to the TLM now, because you’ve moved or it’s not being offered or something?

I’m not sure that ‘ignoring what’s going on around you’ is the best way to assist at the Mass.

It would be better if you attended the EF instead of the OF. It does not make sense to ignore the prayers of the OF so that you can privately read the prayers of the EF. If you attend the OF, you should concentrate fully on the prayers of the OF. If you attend the EF, you should concentrate fully on the prayers of the EF.

If you have a strong preference for the EF, then you should attend the EF. It is not sinful to prefer one form of the Mass over another; and it would not be sinful if you stopped attending the OF Mass in order to attend the EF Mass.

Query; would it be acceptable if I brought a Novus Ordo missal to an EF Mass and do what ncstevem does?

You could do this but I would not see the point, just as I cannot see the point in bringing an EF Missal to the OF. If you have such strong preferences for a particular form of the Mass, then you should attend that particular form.

Since it sounds like you can no longer get to a weekly EF Sunday Mass (high or low), you should do all you can to encourage this priest.

Let him know how much you appreciate the EF Masses he does offer and how reverant and beautiful his OF Masses are. Offer to help train the altar boys, to start a schola or a rosary group. Take up a special collection for vestments, a monstrance, altar candles, or whatever the parish needs. Most importantly prat for him. Ask for an adoration hour after Wed night Mass and commit to being there every week. My parish started with adoration every Wed from the noon Mass to 8pm and we now have a dedicated adoration chapel that is open M-Sat all day until 10pm!

Malleus : Although I recommend avoiding the OF altogether whenever possible - when this isnt possible - One need not actively participate in it either. Meaning? No communion in the hand. No holding hands for the Our Father. No sign of Peace. Women wear a Veil and Dress modestly. Like Martin Luther King and Mahatma Ghandi - civil disobedience works. Make these modernists be Catholic by giving them good example of what they arent.

Good for You mrs Sally.

What a thoroughly disgusting post. It’s amazing that you dare to call yourself “Catholic.”

How so? Could you please elaborate beyond your ad hominem attack. What is “thoroughly disgusting” about not receiving in the hand, not holding hands for the Pater Noster, wearing a veil and dressing modestly?

Every pope since Paul VI has celebrated the Ordinary Form of the Mass. To suggest that someone “not actively participate” in that celebration is completely contrary to the duties and practice of a faithful Catholic. And please don’t start with the ad hominem attack chorus; it is a serious thing for an anonymous poster on the internet to " recommend avoiding the OF altogether whenever possible." I’m sure that the Holy Father and those bishops who are united with him would disagree and they are, after all, the legitimate authorities of the Church.

Actively participating in the OF does not mean receiving in the hand, holding hands, dressing immodestly or without a veil, etc. But we are called to assist at Mass on Sundays and Holy Days and there are people’s parts to the OF Mass - the various responses, Confiteor, Gloria, Sanctus, Agnus Dei, and so on. I don’t think the Church would have parts for the people and expect us to assist at Mass but not expect us to do our parts of the Mass. Even the Sign of Peace (like it or not) is a part of the Mass when the priest chooses to use it (but running up and down the aisles getting chatty isn’t).

It sets a much better example to all to fully and reverently participate in the Mass than to sit there reading from a Missal ignoring what’s going on around. This does not have to include participating in illicit practices.

Could you please answer **my **question? The poster explained what he meant by “not actively participate” - aka no CITH, hand holding, etc. You replied by saying that was thoroughly disgusting. Again I ask you, how is that thoroughly disgusting?

Perhaps “not actively participate” was a poor choice of words on the poster’s part. Regardless, he explained what he meant. You realize, what you called “thoroughly disugsting” is how BXVI celebrates his Masses?
