Praying the *Entire* Rosary

Holy Mother the Church has Approved the Apparitions of the Blessed Virgin Mary at Fatima. So WE didnt add those prayers - OUR LADY did. That is a distinction you seem to have missed.

Since when is any Pope or EVERY POPE combined greater than the Mother of GOD? Dont get me wrong - all prayer is good. But the 15 Promises to those who piously pray the Holy Rosary daily were promised to those who recite the 15 Mystery Holy Rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary by the Mother of GOD herself. So once you comply with what the Mother of GOD has requested we do as a minimum - why then could we not than after it is completed - then pray the Lumenous Mysteries if this is what you want to do or any other prayer? You see - I dont see why Catholics today always look to do the minimum - the least they can get away with. Or to replace what the Mother of GOD has requested with new mysteries and then not pray the mysteries she has requested. So perhaps we should not only listen - but do more than the minimum IMO.

In the CCC (2682 ) we are reminded that we pray in communion with The Blessed Mother about Jesus in which She points to and asks us to reflect on HIM. Praying the rosary was a way of praying the Liturgy of the Hours, without having to know all the prayers. Praying the rosary is a way of reading/meditating on scripture. The Luminous Mysteries are just an additional reading from scripture … it adds … not detracts from your prayer life.

Mal: Well you bring up a good point that the Holy Rosary is all encompassing. Yes we have to meditate and physically recite the prayers so that our prayer is both Spiritual and Physical simultaneously. I dont have an issue with people praying them. I just have an issue with people assuming that because they pray those mysteries that they do not think they have to pray the Joyful Mysteries on thursday as well to comply with our Ladys Request. When Our Lady made the promises she didnt mention JPII nor did JPII ever say that the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to him nor is their a miracle attributed to the revelation of the Lumenous mysteries.

One more point, but not to be rude or condescending , but I believe that the rosary came from our Lord and He asked His Mother to promote this prayer so that many could have His story available to them at all times even when they might be unable to read or even have a priest available for the Holy Mass and for teaching. Just my humble opinion.

Mal: Everything comes from Our LORD. And I completely agree with this. The Blessed Virgin Mary doesnt do anything to detract from her Divine Son - everything she does is to Glorify HIM. And yes as described earrlier - the Rosary has its roots in the Psalter.

Mal: That is about 4 times more than Our Lady requested. Thats what I am talking about. May Our Lord reward you for your piety through the Intercession of his Blessed Mother.

The 15 Promises for those who recite the Rosary

The following are the 15 promises of Mary to Christians who recite the rosary:
(given to St. Dominic and Blessed Alan)
  1. Whoever shall faithfully serve me by the recitation of the rosary, shall receive signal graces.
  2. I promise my special protection and the greatest graces to all those who shall recite the rosary.
  3. The rosary will be a powerful armor against hell. It will destroy vice, decrease sin and defeat heresies.
  4. It will cause virtue and good works to flourish; it will obtain for souls the abundant mercy of God; it will withdraw the hearts of men from the love of the world and its vanities, and will lift them to the desire of eternal things. Oh, that souls would sanctify themselves by this means.
  5. Those who recommend themselves to me by the recitation of the Rosary shall not perish.
  6. Whoever shall recite the rosary devoutly, applying himself to the consideration of its sacred mysteries shall never be conquered by misfortune. God will not chastise him in His justice, he shall not perish by an unprovided death; if he be just, he shall remain in the grace of God, and become worthy of eternal life.
  7. Whoever shall have a true devotion for the rosary shall not die without the sacraments of the Church.
  8. Those who are faithful to recite the rosary shall have during their life and at their death, the light of God and the plentitude of His graces; at the moment of death they shall participate in the merits of the saints in paradise.

Here is my nickle on this discussion: :cool:

I did not grow up doing the Rosary. But when I was told of WHY we do Rosary, it began to mean so much more to me.

I started with The Apostle’s Creed, the Lord’s Prayer, three Hail Mary’s, then the Lord’s Prayer and ten Hail Marys until I made my way around.

Then, it was the AC, the LP, 3x HM, the Mysteries, the LP and 10x HM until I made my way around.

I got a CD with the Rosary, and that meant AC, LP, 3x HM, Mystery, LP and 10 HM, Gloria Patri and Fatima Prayer until I made my wary around. Then I got to the Hail Holy Queen and Doxology

(This was my motivation: I wouldn’t allow myself to say a HHQ until I had done a Rosary, and I wanted to say the HHQ)

There really is no ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ way to do the Rosary. It should be prayerful and respectful 😉

Today, when I do the Hail Mary it is usually

AC, LP, 3x HM, GP, Mystery, LP, 10 HM, GP,FP, "My God we believe, we adore, we trust in you and we love you. We ask pardon for those who do not believe, nor adore, nor trust in you or love you. Oh Sacrament Most Holy, Oh Sacrament Divine. All praise and all thanksgiving be every moment thine’ ‘Come. Come Holy Spirit. Come by means of the powerful intercession of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, Your well beloved spouse’ around. As I complete, it’s HHQ, Memore, Doxology, and St. Michael’s Prayer.

It takes me only about 15 minutes to do the Rosary. My focus isn’t speed. It’s just remarkable how many times a day a Rosary can be done… so whenever I see a 15 minute break without interruption, I see that as time when I can ‘make a bouquet of rosed for my Blessed Mother, and use them to tie the devil’ 😃

I wish I would have known about the Rosary earlier in my life, but I love it now. 🙂
 
Why do you feel that it’s so important to ‘finish’ the Rosary at one sitting? That means, the entire Rosary? For what purpose? I have a hard time believing that it is for prayer. 🤷

I agree that the point of prayer isn’t to ‘finish’ the prayer 🤷

But for me, I tend to not take quiet time… for ME

I look at people who come to Mass on Sundays, and sit through the Homily (which means “Short Sermon”) looking at their watches. As if to say, ‘how much longer do I have to sit here’. :o

If you look at Mass in the perspective of this is how you start your week, your day, and it’s not an interruption to your ‘important’ life, the Mass is really quite short.

I look at the Rosary as a time when I can stop whatever is going on and put God first. 👍

As I do the Rosary, I often imagine each Hail Mary being a cloud folded into a rose to give to the Blessed Virgin. Imagine someone bringing you a dozen roses and they toss them at you and run before you can even say ‘Thank you’ :eek:

Do we have to say the Rosary in one sitting? Of course not. But should we take some time when we put God first? Most certainly. If we can just give God 15 minutes or 20 minutes, and then we will complete Rosaries, the Angelus, the Divine Mercy Chaplet… all moments of prayers.

Praying is us talking to God. We pray to offer Him adoration, to be contrite, to give thanks and sometimes out of supplication. The Rosary offers us time to do all of those things. 😛
 
A HOMILY is quite different than a sermon. It comes from HOMILETICS which is teaching of the Bible. A lot of sermons don’t do that. The priest is supposed to preach on the meaning of the passage given for that day and what the Church teaches about it.
 
Let me weigh in on one thing unles I might have been misunderstood.

All Prayer is GOOD.

So please understand - I presented a Method of Praying the 15 Mystery Holy Rosary to the Blessed Virgin Mary that carries with it 15 Promises given by the Blessed Virgin Mary to those who are devoted to her under this method.

That doesnt mean that what anyone does or doesnt do is wrong. The World needs more prayer not less. My purpose was to present a Rosary approach not to condemn what others may or may not do.

Please forgive me if you thought otherwise.

How do I do this? After completing the 5th decade of the first set of Mysteries, do I just go right into the 2nd set? Or do I finish the first set as usual (Hail, Holy Queen and the Sign of the Cross) and start completely over with the second set (Sign of the Cross, Apostle’s Creed, Our Father, 3 Hail Marys, etc.)?

Sorry for my ignorance, but I’ve never done it this way before. :confused:

I’m sure you’ve had a lot of good answers, but the way to do this is to just continue with the next chaplett directly if you finished the previous chaplett. When you’re completely done, you do the Hail Holy Queen and Closing Prayer.

I didn’t mean to imply that it is “better” to do it all in one sitting. I love praying the Rosary, it puts me immediately at peace, and I’ve always only done one set of Mysteries a day. I just felt that since I had Christmas day off from work, wasn’t traveling, etc., what better way to spend the day than in prayer? Since I enjoy praying it, and for once I had the time to do it all, why not?

Nor did I mean to imply that it’s a “chore,” get it over with and out of the way; that is, I didn’t mean to make to sound like if I sit and pray the entire Rosary at once, I’m “off the hook” for the rest of the week. It’s an enjoyable part of every day, whether I’ve already prayed it all this week or not.
 
There is also another way to look at the Rosary - from the pre-Christian practice of sacrifice.

To sum it up, pre-Christian concepts of sacrifice revolved around the idea that if we give to the gods they will give to us in return, that if we make a sacrifice to them from our needed lot in life they will reciprocate and give us blessings in this world and the next.

Essentially, this concept survives in Christianity. Of course, pagan idolatry is wholly done away with, but the concept that when we give to God He will give back to us is not lost and in fact finds perfection; the pagan, for example, needed no special faith or humility or devotion to sacrifice - the deed merely had to be done. The Christian understanding is that we must believe in faith, give joyfully to the Lord to please Him, seek to advance in virtue and retreat from vice. When we give of ourselves to the Lord in this manner, we are taught that He will smile upon us and bless us as He knows best.

To say the Rosary, even just five decades, is a sacrifice. Especially because it is not mandatory; we do not need to say the Rosary but when we set aside the time to do so, we are taking time away from whatever else we could have done with it and given it instead to God in prayer. According to the Blessed Mother, we will obtain much from this sacrifice; from giving of our time to the Lord in this prayer, we will receive many graces and favors. This is essentially the ancient pagan concept of sacrifice converted to the Faith and honed into a Godly fashion.

As Catholics, we are not brought up to do just the bare minimum to get in God’s favor, but to go all-out according to our ability and go above and beyond in our quest for holiness. The Rosary is a traditional and powerful, and highly accessible, method of doing this. I pray more Catholics take advantage of it 🙂
