Praying the Hail Mary during Mass?

It has come to my attention that there is a parish where the priest and faithful pray the Hail Mary together right after the Our Father. This is at every Mass, and not on particular feast days in honor of Mary. I have searched everywhere and do not see where this is allowed. Is the practice illicit?

Someone ask this question a while ago. It’s not restricted in the Canon Law.

so what? how does this affect you? it is bad enough to allow your peace and attentiveness at Mass to be disturbed by little variances at your own parish, but to worry about other parishes is a bit extreme, and the general attitude it cultivates is potentially very damaging to one’s spiritual health.

Hi Puzzleannie!

I am asking because a friend of mine was concerned as this is present in his parish. Your tone strikes me as odd and uncharitable. I hope I am wrong and you overreacted to my post. My spiritual health is just fine, thank you.

I think it is permissable to say the Hail Mary on occasion at the end of the Prayer of the Faithful. It probably should not become a standard procedure.

Saying the Hail Mary during Mass is a custom in the United Kingdom. Could it be the priest is from there? We have a priest in our parish who prays the Hail Mary during Mass. I cannot be certain but I do believe he is from the United Kingdom and this would be customary to him.
It doesn’t bother me because Mary’s yes made it possible for God to become Man and therefore make everlasting life possible!

Many churches routinely say the Hail Mary during the prayers of the faithful–especially if they pray for the life of the unborn. As other posters have said also, it is very common in the UK and a priest who was trained or lived there may retain this practice.

Since there is nothing in the rubrics that specifically forbids it, I don’t think you or your friend should waste time worrying over this. Your friend could ask his/her priest why it is done, but this is not anything to go to the Bishop about.

Already done. 🙂 The friend I am speaking of lives in another state and is currently in the RCIA program while in college. He intends to discuss this with the priest but has not yet had the opportunity. I just thought that since I could not find anything in the online Catholic resources, this forum would be a good place to ask. My post may have sounded as though I was in a state of alarm, but I assure you I was not. He asked me about it and I wanted to find an answer for him. Bless you!
