Who here prays the liturgy of hours (LOH)? My husband and I wake up every morning around 3:30ish am (he works at 4:00) and I usually say the first LOH prayer. Then if I stay up, I’ll try to catch the 6am and 9am, just pray through the psalms and such, but usually around 12pm, 3pm, and 6pm I fizzle out, but I do try to say the night prayer 9pm if I remember. Anyway, for those who pray the LOH, what are some good tips about remembering to pray throughout the day? Or is it just something you get used to once you’ve been trying for awhile? And where do you find your LOH prayers? I use the Laudate app on my phone. Are there any other better resources? Though I’d prefer not to purchase the actual books. Thanks in advance for your replies!

I think you mostly get into a routine. For myself, I get up, put on the coffee, and then it’s time to pray. In the evening I get home from work and that’s when the busy part of my day ends and it’s time to pray. It starts to get into the rhythm of your life.

I like the iBreviary app. It presents the prayers in order so you know which psalms to pray, which antiphons to use, etc.

You most definitely get into a routine! I use the physical books, but I love the iBreviary app :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

In 1964 upon entering first year college in a minor seminary, we used a paperback book entitled Morning Praise and Evensong. As it was said in community, we met before Mass and breakfast, and before dinner. Compline was on your own.

I later graduated to the large one volume, then someone gifted me a used 4 volume set, which I still use. Timing is precarious as I am not retired. And sometimes just tired.

What I miss the most is saying it in community.

I pray it. I’m a Lay Dominican (in formation). Lay Dominicans make promises to pray at least Lauds & Vespers each day.

I would suggest making a commitment to praying 1 to 3 hours (offices) at first.

I suggest the following for starters:
  • Lauds (Morning Prayer)
  • Vespers (Evening Prayer)
  • Compline (Night Prayer)
But it sounds like you might already be doing Matins (Office of Readings) with your husband. If so, that’s cool.

My point, get in the habit of praying a few at a time and then slowly add them over time.

By “night time prayers,” does he mean Vespers or Compline? I think I already know the answer but don’t want to assume. 🙂

I own the four volume Liturgy of the Hours set and pray what I can when I can.

The vinyl/faux leather set is beautiful and each book is a different colour.
Though I’d prefer not to purchase the actual books.
They are pricey. My set was about $200 New Zealand dollars brand new but I think it’s usually more expensive (now it’s listed at $370 NZD brand new!). You may be able to pick up a used set for a lot less. Look online.

Yes I pray it daily. For the better part of 20 years. I like the routine it favours, but also its flexibility when life gets in the way.
