Praying the Rosary during Mass

The nail clipping thread got me thinking about other stuff I see at Mass.

Praying the Rosary during Mass seems kind of rude to me, even if it’s silent prayer. We have a chance to talk to God all week, so we need to shut up and listen when He’s talking to us at Mass.

Or should I just mind my own business? Not that I would ever say anything.

You have a right to your opinion…I have my Rosary wrapped around my hand during Mass as I say it before Mass and just keep it there wrapped in my hand as a force of habit…maybe that’s what others are doing…
On some occasions, I must confess that I have prayed it during an awful homily too…:o

You are correct that it is not to be said during Mass. That has always been a no-no and one the church has tried to emphasize as a beautiful prayer practice BUT not during Mass. The Mass is the summit of our faith and it is to be fully participated in. One does not fully participate in the prayers of the Mass by saying the rosary. For instance, the Mass prayers are very precise and people are scandalized when a priest changes them and should be scandalized.

Yet, I have seen the same people who will lambaste a priest for a missed word or gesture at Mass say the Rosary at Mass. I don’t know what makes them tic and I would advise just ignore them and let them do their thing. Although, should they have the temerity to grip about how the priest said Mass, then I would point out as gently as possible, that their saying the Rosary during Mass is not fulfilling their obligation to participate fully in the Prayers of THE MASS.
 
I’m 60+ and when I was a little boy I can remember my father mumbling the Rosary during Mass. When I got older I asked him about it and he told me to mind my own business. That aside, I do have a question somewhat related to this thread. I’ve been at Mass when the priest has said a Hail Mary in the middle of it. I’m sure it was a church calendar day honoring Mary but shouldn’t it be done at the end of Mass?

I also thought that prayers like the Hail Mary should be said after mass, but I 'm not complaining. The 3 priests I know who pray the Hail Mary after the intercessions are 3 really holy priests. I like saying the Hail Mary much better than the *Parish Stewardship Prayer *we said at my last parish. Oh, that prayer drove me crazy!!! I am so tired of the words " time, talent and treasure".

We have a lot of Italians in our parish and some of the folks reciting the rosary during the mass are older and often barely can speak in English. Our former bishop was fluent in Italian, and once when I missed all the English masses, I had to join the Italian mass… it was pretty tough, especially sitting through the homily. So we never know.
 
what is the preoccupation on these forums with watching and wondering what other people are doing at Mass? are you that bored? Can’t you find some liturgical dancers, altar girls, bad singers, lousy lectors, or something else to look at and criticise? Please just pick up your missalette and keep your mind on the sacrifice and your eyes on the altar. That old lady in the back with her rosary just may be a mystic in contemplation of Christ on a level you and I will never reach this side of heaven, so chill.

Well, I guess if you want to get technical, there is no greater prayer than the Mass. I’ve often wondered how someone can concentrate on both things at one time.
 
Though I have never said the Rosary during Mass I have held my Rosary in my hand. It is a comfort to me, especially if I am having a difficult time, and it reminds me what it does for me when I say the Rosary prayers. So many prayers have been said on these beads! And since I have several different Rosaries each has special meaning for me and when I bring one to Mass it is present for more prayers. The Blessed Mother saved my life when I was born and I feel especially close to Her when I have my Rosary in my hands. I don’t say the Rosary during Mass but sometimes say it before or after. I am too engaged in the Mass to be able to say Hail Marys at the same time! and I wouldn’t want to.
 
Ok - how about this? The Rosary during Adforation? I am wondering if I should be just focusing my time on Jesus and not the rosary - leave the rosary till after?

At my church the First Friday Adoration hour is interesting… and a bit different from what I had seen before. After the opening rites, the priest gives a brief homily, then we sit in silence, then the priest reads some scripture, then we sit in silence again, then we have prayers for specific intentions, then more silent adoration, and then the closing blessing with singing. There isn’t time to recite a full rosary during the quite times between scripture readings, homily, and prayers. During those times I just stay focused on the monstrance… sometimes just repeating in my mind over and over, “Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.”
