Praying the Rosary in Church

Is it proper for a group to pray the rosary aloud in church after mass while other people are praying silently. I love the rosary, but wonder about this practice. Just looking for other opinions. Thanks…

The Holy Rosary is one of the most perfect Christian prayers, one that is greatly pleasing to God and that greatly honors Our Lady.

I do admit that it can sometimes be disturbing to hear the loud recitation of the Rosary in Church…then again, there is a time for everything, and a place for everything. I think that if that is the time that the faithful have chosen for group prayer and allowed by the priest, and we’d rather meditate silently, then we should move somewhere else that is quiet. Just like if someone walks into a chapel of Perpetual Adoration where silence is the rule and starts talking, he or she may be kindly asked to be quiet or go somewhere else if he or she wants to pray loud.

I am often a bit bothered by the way in which the Ave Maria are recited. Though I do know that after a long time, we do pray faster without this meaning a lessening in devotion, too often the prayer sounds way too mechanical, as if we were trying to go through the 10 prayers, rather than remembering that in every Ave Maria we should have the reverence of Archangel Gabriel and of holy Elizabeth before Our Lady.
 
I think if the activity were arranged ahead of time, like something announced in the Sunday church bulletin, then my opinion is that it is okay. Perhaps it was meant to be a parish activity to celebrate October as Rosary Month. If it wasn’t arranged ahead of time, then maybe not. I suggest being clear about how you would like things to be (perhaps quiet time before the Eucharist or altar?), and then bringing it up with the parish priest or a rep of the parish council to see how they would like things to be. If some parish members are behind how you would like things to be, then you’d have some leverage to negotiating how you would like things to be. Apparently I believe there is no hard fast rule about what events happen in the parish church other than what is sanctioned by the parish.
 
I would respect others if too loud. , my concern would be to instead dedicate and focus Mass time on our savior Jesus Christ.

It is ok - but they should wait around ten -fifteen minutes after mass to begin.

There is a small group at our parish that starts the Rosary a couple minutes after daily Mass ends, with the blessing of our pastor. If I happen to be doing something else, it doesn’t bother me. My Master is telling me to do one thing; their Master is telling them to do something else; I can deal with it. (Of course, it helps that I have a hearing loss 😃 )

Clarification: They to the rosary in the main church, not in the silent adoration chapel where the Blessed Sacrament is exposed.
 
It is much better than the loud conversation that tends to erupt after Mass in many parishes. Perhaps it’s institution was to limit the desire to have conversations while still on the presence of our Lord?
Besides, it is a great way to thank God for allowing our participation in the Holy Sacrifice.
 
I would think this is fairly common. Here theres a group who before the mass they gather and pray the Rosary daily. There is also the mass for the Novena of the Miraculous Medal here on Monday Nights also which of course they all pray the Rosary before the Mass.
 
If a group has gathered to pray the rosary after mass, I would think the group has precedence over one or two others who decide to remain afterwards and pray in silence. How many are there who do this, as opposed to the numbers who pray the rosary?

You should be thankful they are not doing this before mass. We had one such group that would pray almost up to the last minute before mass began, and those who arrived a couple minutes beforehand did not have a few moments of silence to recollect their spirits for the celebration and offer their intentions. Our new pastor, thanks be to God, asked them to begin their prayers earlier to give us this quiet time.

I agree that they should wait for a short time after mass to begin the rosary to let communicants pray quietly in thanksgiving … but only if there are enough of you to warrant delaying it. Bring the matter to your pastor and allow him to make a wise decision. He may not be sensitive to the problem until he is made aware of it.
 
They should do it quietly so they don’t disturbed those silently praying. At my Parish many people get together and pray the Rosary before Mass on Sundays
 
I never see it as a bad time for a group of people to get together and say the rosary. I wish my church did this.

Plus, many parishes don’t have time prior to mass to have a full blown rosary. Many times the amount of time between masses is very minimal, so the only time to do it would be after the last mass for the day.
 
The churches I go for Extraordinary Form do the Rosary before Mass starts. Most participants sit close by each other, and 1 person usually leads it. I’ve been to a few other churches that recite the Rosary after Mass, and mainly in May and/or October.
 
Members of the Legion of Mary have recited the rosary after daily Mass for many years, They begin directly after Mass, which doesn’t bother me at all.

We are now also reciting the rosay *before *Sunday Masses. However, we start 1/2 hour before Mass in order to be finished early enough to allow time for silent prayer directly before Mass starts.

To the OP, it never hurts to ask a couple of questions. You can ask which group sponsors the rosary and also if there is another chapel or place for quiet reflection before/after Mass. You may also want to join in!
 
At my parish the Holy Name Society prays the rosary before the 8:30 am Mass every Sunday. We have done this for years, I have noticed that the number of people who arrive early to pray the rosary has increased and continues to do so.
 
Many churches have the rosary at a set time, before or after mass. This almost always has pastoral approval, and it should be respected.

Of course it is proper. That is what the church buildings are for, public prayer. If you want total silence for prayer, lock yourself in a room (Matthew 6:6).
 
When I went early before Latin Mass, we would pray the Rosary out loud as a group.
