Praying the rosary in public?

I certainly applaud the OP and hope he will continue, but I am truly amazed at how many pray the rosary in public Hooray for all of you, for this is truly one of the things saving our country and our whole world. Those who pray the Rosary are Mary’s army. I also pray the Rosary in public on my way to work or wherever I am going. I normally keep it in my pocket, but there are times I take it out. People may think I am crazy, but this is New York, and crazy is kind of common here.

One time when many do resent seeing the rosary in public is in front of an abortion clinic. Then they know exactly what you are doing. It is a tremendous witness. I urge anyone who can to take their rosary to an our modern killing fields. You are truly needed there.

I am currently in college and I have found myself having long breaks until my next classes. For this reason I have time to pray the rosary. I usually pray it while sitting at a bench. A lot of people pass by and thus they are able to see me praying the rosary.

I have prayed the rosary in public in other places as well, such as if I am waiting for someone who is in a store and taking long. I would sit outside the store and pray the rosary in a bench for example.

No one has said anything but a lot of people can obviously see what I am doing.

I was wondering if there is anything wrong with this? I am asking because I know Jesus did say that we should not let our prayers be seen and shown but do them in secret and such. At the same time I know people pray the rosary in public such as in front of abortion clinics for example and other pro-life events.

I asked a friend of mine who is a devout Catholic and he said that there is nothing wrong. As a matter of fact he said it is a good thing. He said that it is not bad as long as you do not do it for the mere sake of wanting to be seen. Every time I am about to pray the rosary in public I say a quick prayer asking God that I do not do this for the sake of being seen, but that God may be seen.
I don’t see anything wrong with it if not doing it for any vain reason. When I have to wait in traffic or a long line at bank, elsewhere, I do it and keep count on my fingers. You don’t need the beads to pray the rosary. Then people don’t even know that you are silently praying.

Good for you… Nice to see others pray the rosary in public too. I often do this, and say it while running and riding my bike. Have to use my fingers to keep count for that though.

Nothing at all wrong with praying the rosary in public. I pray it in my car, on my way to work, along with a Catholicity CD. It gets my day off to a good start and makes it impossible to swear at the idiot who cuts me off. 👍

I pray the rosary while I walk and have prayed it on airplane rides and at doctors offices.

My father always prayed while he waited at the doctors office.

I think you are doing great.

This is great! A priest a long time ago told me that’s why God gave us 10 fingers.

But to the OP, your friend is right. There is nothing wrong with publicly praying the rosary, or saying any prayer, actually.

It’s a great way to spend time which could otherwise be frustrating for you. Would be a lot less road rage if people did that.

Cute what your priest told you. 🙂 My husband taught me that trick. He was an alter boy 60 years or so ago. Probably learned it from his priest. I doubt I would have ever thought to try that otherwise. He does it that way a good bit.

I pray rosary in the car. I’m sure other drivers can see especially when stopping at traffic lights. I used to hide it, not anymore.
Sometimes people need a little permission to see that something is OK. Seeing you pray your rosary, may help them not to be shy to do the same in public or in private. You are not calling attention to yourself, you are calling attention to IT and of course to HIM.
Wouldn’t it be great if there was a subtle way to invite others to join in?

So have I, and I am one of them. Why don’t you join us? 😉
The amount of folks doing it is fairly small, so you might have been one of the ones I saw. 🙂 Actually, when I saw the person praying the rosary, it brought me great comfort. I have, in fact, prayed the rosary on the train, via iPod.

I normally take the F train. I use to pray with an ipod, but now I use my rosary and use these meditations

Give a wave next time you see one of us praying the rosary. 🙂

Since I entered university, I have started this habit of praying Rosary (or now, Divine Mercy because I pray Rosary every night too) every morning while waiting for bus. I graduated almost 2 years ago but I simply cannot start my day without one round of prayers. My rosary is a long one so people obviously notice what I am doing. I feel nothing wrong with doing it.

👍👍👍

I too pray the rosary in public. On the beach is great. On the streets of foreign cities (especially ones where I don’t speak the language!). And we have a 'Pray the Rosary" sticker in the back window of our car. Thank you for posting this. Mary’s army is everywhere!

I pray the rosary in public because once when I was on an airplane and a elderly lady was next to me and she said, “Would you explain the rosary to me, I fondly remember my grandmother praying the rosary.” Of course I was delighted to explain it to her. You never know when someone will see you praying the rosary and ask you about it.

One time while waiting for my wife to finish shopping I was in the hotel lobby and prayed the Rosary. The waitress who brought me some tea saw what I was doing and said she hadn’t prayed the Rosary for ages but said seeing me reminded her that she should start again.

I pray the rosary all the time in public, while walking, while waiting in lines etc. The difference for me is usually in my pocket at these times and I just used my mind, and fingers, to keep track. I do break it out once in a while if I’ll be sitting for some time.

Nothing wrong with either of these ways at all. In fact, I think it’s quite fantastic really. 🙂
