I admit to the viewing the rosary as a simply a way to petition things from Jesus and Mary. I’m now thinking there must be immense spiritual benefits to praying it, intentions or not.

I am on the latter half of a 54 day novena and the rosaries are prayed as gratitude. But surely there is more to it than “thank you”? Praying the Our Fathers and Hail Mary’s and meditating on the mysteries must have their own benefits, no?

petition things
“Petition things” can be a very broad thing. It can range from the mundane and trivial such as asking for your football team to win, all the way to petitioning for greater understanding of Mary’s assent to God so that your own discipleship may resemble hers.

Likewise, we needn’t only petition for what we want, but also what others need: that our brothers and sisters in conflict zones may be kept safe, that our bishops may continue to boldly proclaim the Gospel, that our politicians may be guided by the Holy Spirit in their decisions (yes, even politicians deserve our petitions!), etc.
