I will enroll in RCIC this fall, so I can finally receive Jesus in the Eucharist. Until then, I’m starting to try to live like a Catholic as much as possible. I need help with the Rosary. In fact, I got it blessed just this morning! I know about reciting all of the prayers on certain beads, but what do you do when you get to a mystery? What do you actually say/think/do? Any help is appreciated.

The idea behind the rosary is that it helps you meditate on Jesus and the various events in his life. So for each decade (one Our Father and 10 Hail Marys) you meditate on one of the mysteries. Right before you say the Our Father, you say the mystery for that decade and then while you are praying the whole decade, you think about that mystery.

It can be pretty hard at first to do all that at once, but don’t worry too much about that. As you learn the prayers it gets easier and easier! 😃

And btw, Welcome Home! 😃

What about crossing while praying the Rosary? Other than that the beginning.

There are various meditations for each mystery I use the ones in my Daily Missal…EWTN has an excellent page on praying the Rosary (ewtn.com/Devotionals/prayers/rosary/how_to.htm) I will say the Mystery then pray the meditation before the Our Father and during the Hail Mary’s it helps me meditate on the mystery.

How great! I wish you great blessings on your journey to becoming a Catholic.

When I pray the Rosary, I ask Mary to pray with and for me…(and I insert prayers of thanksgiving, or petitions for others, etc) after each mystery is stated (I follow along with a cd) and it has really made the Rosary even that much more powerful in my life. For example, I might say…Mary, please pray with me for all of my dearly departed loved ones, (and I’ll name them)…and then I say…as I offer this up to God, in the name of His Son, Jesus. Then, I proceed to pray the Hail Mary. I sometimes shut the cd off after each mystery is announced…but if I’m following along with Mother Angelica on EWTN, I just meditate as the nuns are reciting. Maybe give it a try…see how it goes. Good luck on your faith journey!

That is Great! I will pray for you in your journey to becoming a Catholic.

The mysteries are designed to focus on Jesus’ life. When you start a set of mysteries (ex. Luminous) for each decade of the rosary you meditate of that certain mystery (ex The Assumption). Also, I have encountered that a lot of people I have heard say the Holy Rosary leave out a prayer, I personally like this prayer a lot. It is called the Fatima Prayer, you say it after each decade. Its purpose is that you are also praying for peace ( that is what the message of Fatima is, more or less) it goes like this.

Oh My Jesus,
Forgive us our sins save us from the fires of hell. Lead all souls to heaven especially those in most need of Thy Mercy.

I really hope this helps, message me if you need any more help!🙂

Well, when I come to a mystery I ‘announce’ it to myself, recall the matching scripture verses from memory and as I do that, I put myself in that passage–imagining myself sitting in the corner of the room for example, when Gabriel the archangel appears to Mary (the first Joyous mystery). I ponder about how the Blessed Virgin must have reacted upon hearing the words of the angel and how it would all play out and think how, for the briefest of moments, all creation paused in all its cycles while waiting for Mary to finally say, ‘Behold, the handmaid of the Lord; be it done unto me according to your word.’
It is this little meditation that I keep my mental focus on while praying the decade.

Hope this helps

Joe
