Praying the Rosary

When you pray the rosary, are you praying all of the mysteries in one prayer session, or one mystery per day? It is a little bit confusing!
 
The Dominic Rosary (the most common one today) can either be prayed as one set of mysteries per day (i.e., Joyful, Luminous, Sorrowful, Glorious) or as all 20 mysteries per day.
 
I should note that as for myself, I pray one set of mysteries at per sitting (which takes about 10-20 minutes depending on how fast I’m saying the prayers). Whether or not I have more than one sitting per day varies.
 
While visiting my local Catholic Book Store, several years ago, I found a little book on the Mysteries of the Rosary. According to this book, we are to pray the Mysteries as follows:

Sunday Glorious

Monday Joyful

Tuesday Sorrowful

Wednesday Glorious

Thursday Luminous

Friday Sorrowful

Saturday Joyful

Just a note regarding Sundays. The mysteries said on Sundays depends on the season. Advent/Lent you would say the sorrowful, Christmas would be the joyful and Easter on would be the glorious. I don’t say the luminous mysteries. first I can hardly remember the original 15 😃 but also, I’m not sure why we have the luminous mysteries to begin with. plus with the original 15, it is easy to remember the order; monday, joyful, tues, sorrow, wed glorious, thurs joy, fri sorrow sat glorious and sunday which one is appropriate for the season.
 
I usually pray the mysteries for that day/season but if I recite them while driving and get to my destination before I finish, I continue later that day.🙂
 
I say only the Joyful, Sorrowful and Glorious Mysteries and in latin. I use an mp3 player so that I can continue with my daily duties. I start around 8:00am every morning, right after morning offering and continue until about dinner. (around 6:00pm). Evening prayer starts for me about 9:00pm until 10:00pm. I then say another set of Mysteries without the mp3. Normally I get about 12 rosaries a day done properly.

Also I’m trying to learn vespers and compline in latin. I’ve found the Monks of Norcia on the net and it is helping. I tried to remember the Angelus but I always miss the time. Thats what getting old does to you.
 
First and foremost, when ever you pray try to give your undivided attention to the words you are saying, put your heart and soul behind them. I know alot of people that say they pray the rosary when their driving or doing house work or even while watching TV. Great, nothing wrong with it, atleast your trying. However, if you really want to benefit from prayer, do as the Lord prescibed. Go to the inner room of your house where there are no distractions, pray in secret, where the Father will answer you in secret.

I pray the sciptual rosary, because it helps me contemplate on the mysteries themselves, try not to speed through the rosary. Recite each Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory Be as if you were reading the words out of a book for the first time. Once a prayer is memorized it becomes habitual, and we forget to imply the meaning behind the words.

I say the Rosary every day, atleast 1 mystery, on my knees (because I choose to) and in my inner room. If I drive long distances I will put the rosary CD in and pray along with it. Thats so I’m not distracted with the hustle and bustle of traffic. However, I will still make a second attempt to say my rosary in solitude with no distractions. I find more satisfaction from prayering when all distractions are gone. No noise, no TV, no traffic, just me and my thoughts. I guess If I am asking for God’s undivided attention than I should probably give Him mine.

I do recite the rosary while driving, but when pressed for time for the most part. Hard to find an inner room at a firehouse.😉 My favorite time, however, is to meditate on the Holy Land sites where these mysteries actually occurred. Such an inner peace.

There is nothing wrong with it. You have the right mind set, your thinking about God and thats what counts! Keep up the good work and stay safe my friend.
An inner room doesn’t nessesarily mean an “inner room” per say, it could be your inner thoughts, in your heart, and soul. When your putting out a fire your probably not thinking about who’s winning the ball game. I think and hope your attention is on the fire at hand. Any distraction could mean your life or the life of one of your fellow fireman. As long as you feel you are giving your prayer’s the respect and attention they and you deserve.

LOL…well said. Actually, I’m getting pretty good at reaching my “spiritual inner room”. My free time both on and off duty is usually spent with my sites on God in the form of prayer. It’s a great help in avoiding the near occassions of sin. 🙂
 
I usually pray just before I go to sleep. Sometimes, I pray when I’m driving.
 
The Rosary is a private devotion, so there’s no ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ way to organise your praying of it.

You can pray as much or as little as you like, and pray it all in one sitting or broken up over the course of a day.

In my old telephone job I used to pray an ‘Our Father’, ‘Hail Mary’, ‘Glory Be’ or ‘O My Jesus’ each time I was waiting for a phone call to come through. That sure did add up to plenty of rosaries (and helped me keep patience with the people I was talking to as well!)

Beat reading trashy magazines or newspapers (which some of the others did) or staring at the walls.

Your Right! But isn’t that true about all prayers. The Rosary is actually structured in that there are 1 Our Father to 10 Hail Marys and 1 Glory Be to each of the 15 or 20 mysteries of the Life of Christ. Depending on if you accept the new Luminous Mysteries (which is an all together different issue and on a different post). And 1 complete Rosary is comprised of them all not just 1 set of mysteries. By praying 1 set of the mysteries you have only completed 1/3 of the rosary. Prayer in itself is merely talking to God from the heart. The same could be said about the Catholic Mass, but you don’t walk out at the 1st reading and come back to it later and finish it, nor would you want to come to mass at communion and then say you attended mass or would you. A devotion means you have great love or zeal towards something. Again, I believe you get out of it what you put into it. If you want to ramble 15 0r 20 Hail Marys and a Glory Be or 2 and throw in an Our Father from time to time and call it a Rosary Devotion than so be it. I don’t believe that this was Our Holy Mothers intend on giving us such a Devotion. I believe she intended it to be said in one sitting at least 1/3 of the Rosary. I believe she was inviting us to take time out of our lives and to devote that time to be with Her in prayer to Her Son.
 
I find that praying the rosary at Eucharistic Adoration allows me the most complete meditation. Distractions are kept at bay when I concentrate on the various events of Our Lords life and death.

Thank you Bubbaman! 👍 I was going to post basically the same thing. In Scripture, where it says to go into your inner room, it is referring to inside yourself, in your heart, soul and mind. Not to let anyone else know what you are doing. :DOur bodies are the Temple of the Holy Spirit. May God richly bless us, who are true and faithful to Our Lady’s Holy Rosary;)
