When I was growing up, I was taught to pray the rosary differently than I am now learning. I
was never taught to pray Hail, Holy Queen and I’m not sure if I was taught to pray the Apostles Creed. I’ve been praying it by saying the Our Father, three Glory Be’s (or Hail Mary’s) another Our Father, then on to the rest of the rosary – ten Hail Mary’s, Our Father, Glory Be, Oh, My Jesus.

Is this alright or do I need to pray it correctly?

Also, what do graces and indulgences mean and what are the graces and indulgences we get from praying the rosary?

And can we pray the rosary for Mary’s intercession with our own personal problems or is it more for problems on a larger scale such as world peace, stopping abortion etc?

have you gone to rosary-center.org/index.htm ??

The correct way to pray the rosary is with the Apostles’ Creed, the three Hail Marys at the start, and the Hail Holy Queen at the end (and sometimes the St Michael’s prayer at the end as well). If you know that this is the correct way, then that is how it should be prayed 🙂

An indulgence is a prayer or sacrifice that takes time off your temporal punishment in purgatory. If you wish you can offer up the indulgence for the Holy Souls in purgatory instead of your own.

For example saying the ‘prayer before a crucifix’ takes 3 years, I believe, off your temporal punishment (I may be mistaken on the exact amount of time). Indulgences need to be accompanied by prayers for the Holy Father (an Our Father, Hail Mary and Glory Be) as well as being in a state of grace and recieving Holy Communion and confession within seven days.

Adding to this, plus you also have to meditate upon the mysteries when you are praying the rosary…

Hm, what about the fatima prayers at the end of each mystery? I was also told that it is wise to finish the rosaryprayer by praying to St Michael for protection.

There is no “correct way” to pray the rosary. The are many cultural traditions and customs. There are are also chapletts that use rosary beads. I have developed one based the the Examen from the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola

What most people are familiar with is this-
you start with the Apostle’s Creed, a Glory Be, 3 Hail Mary’s and an Our Father. For each decade, meditating on the corresponding mystery, pray 10 Hail Mary’s & the Our Father.

Some may or may not insert the Fatima prayer, the St. Michael prayer, personal petitions, etc.

The best advice on prayer I ever received-
Pray as you can, not as you can’t! What matters is that you pray!! 😃

It is what is in your heart that counts when you pray. I am sure that the way you were saying it, even though it is not the current standard, was fine. God looks at our hearts when we pray. Your inner sense of devotion and desire to connect with and honor God through the Rosary and through the Blessed Mother are what’s most important.

“…For the Lord sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.” - 1 Samuel 16:7

God bless.

I had a similar question. I found a YouTube video recently where a priest is showing how to pray the rosary. He states there are different ways of doing so. Myself, I wondered how much leeway we have in how we pray the rosary. I have been concerned about “messing it up.”

Thank you all for the responses, for the original post, and for the resources. :grouphug:

The rosary is a gift and has a rich history, but it is merely a tool for prayer. Formulas help, but the aim is not to mechanically “pray the rosary” but to ask our heavenly Mother’s to intercede in prayer for us. If we pray the traditional mysteries, we also reflect on the life of Christ as we recite the prayers.

Lord, may Faith pray his/her Rosary the way handed down by the Church. May he/she go to a good Catholic website and make sure he/she prays the Rosary the right way. He/she will be able to get indulgences if he/she prays the Rosary the right way. May Faith look up the word “indulgences” in the Enchiridion to properly understand them. Thank you, Lord, for hearing my prayer.

When a person pray the rosary, and the person did a mortal sin, but the person confess his/her sins with a sincere heart and true repentance, if the person prays the holy rosary every time and start to repent, will the person will have to attend the temporal punishment? Or does the rosary lessen your chance to go at temporal punishment and go to heaven?

Thank you so much for answering my question, it’s really a big help.
