This is the title of a book of hours printed by the staunchly Catholic LIGUORI PUBLICATION, and written by Harriet Roberts. Yet this book is not Catholic, staunchlyor otherwise.
Harriet has put together a beginner’s book of hours, especially those beginners suffering from alcoholism and other addiction. The sub-title reads “A Book Of Hours For Those With Addictions”
It is based on the format of The Divine Office, but to make it accessable to a greater number of Christians, much of the oviously Catholic Marian devotions have been removed. (The Magificat remains.)
This is a superb book for helping those who suffer from alcoholism and addictions. (Me.) The book is based on 14 days of prayer, loosly based on the 14 stations of the cross. Each day has 4 sets of prayers, Morning, Noon, Evening, and night. Each individual set of prayers lasts less then 5 minutes, maybe 15 minutes per day.
The idea is not to overload the individual with endless repeatitions of psalms that do not speak to the addicts needs. Each hour has one Psalm, of the type with a message or meaning for us addicts. Plus Bible readings and prayers slanted towards the needs of addicts.
What it does do is encourage the addict to just halt the daily grind four times a day, and lift up the mind to God.
At this point, some of you may be wondering if this book would be of help to those who do not suffer from addictions, who do not have the compulsive-obsessive inclinations of alcoholics. Um, I don’t know, and perhaps someone else can buy, read, and use the book, and also write a review based on a viewpoint of a non-addict.
But for me, this would be one of my desert island books.
