Not the kind that dwells on an island and tries to lure seafaring folk. The kind that tells you somebody is hurt and in need of help. I am looking for a short, heartfelt prayer to pray whenever I hear an ambulance or a fire truck speed by. You know, like the “Eternal rest grant unto them, o Lord” when you see a hearse or pass a cemetery. I have been searching both the interwebz and CAF, but so far I haven’t been able to find anything that feels right. Most are too long for my purpose, I suppose. :o Any tips? I usually just resort to “Please bless whoever is in need, Lord,” but somehow that feels unfinished.

How long is “too long”?

My experience is limited, but I’ve most often heard of the Hail Mary as a set prayer for these circumstances.

I usually pray something similar, “Lord, bless and help everyone involved with that siren,” or something like that, while making the sign of the cross.

Me too. I don’t use any set prayer, just whatever comes to mind at the time.

I am not sure of what words I say, but I do stop and pray for the emergency workers who are involved…that they are safe as they respond. And I pray for the people involved in the crisis. God does not require special prayers…just heart-felt non-verbal prayers. He knows what we mean. I am not sure it that helps or not…

My Nan taught me to do this when I was a kid, and it’s just a habit now. I say a Hail Mary for them.

My 6th grade English teacher taught us to do it. I keep it short because I lived on a street that was a main thoroughfare for emergency vehicles. One evening, I saw a fire truck go by and I prayed. Then, I got a call that a family member who lived nearby had passed away. The fire truck was there. Pray when you hear a siren. It could be for your own family.

I am an Ambulance Tech and when I am on my way to an emergency as part of my preparation I pray at least one “Hail Mary” and a “Glory Be”. I also in the worst case scenario will pray and ask God to greet the soul of the deseased with compasion. I dont know if other people pray but I ask God to guide my hand and help me to cause no pain or suffering.

That’s lovely. God bless you for the work you do, and I thank you.
