Praying with un-canonized saints

This is a question that has been on my mind. If I am praying for a miracle at the request of a future saint, should I only keep asking that saint for their intercession for that particular miracle.

Consider this hypothetical scenario:

Someone dear to me is diagnosed with terminal cancer and I ask the Virgin Mary for her intercession and then I ask John Paul II for his intercession and that person is then inexplicably cured. Though I am thankful to God for this miracle, the down side is that I do not know whether is was Mary’s intercession or John Paul II’s intercession.

What do you do?
 
First, give thanks that your friend was cured.
Second, I have no qualms about asking for the intercession of un-canonized saints. That said, I have had prayers answered with the help of John Paul II, Fr. Antonio, Fr. Mozos and Fr. Hennessey. The last three are names of the priests that have served in my parish and are now with the Lord. Ask those who have gone before us to lift up your prayers to Our Lady and Our Lord.

I usually stick with one at a time. That way, if there is a miraculous resolution to whatever the intention was, I can report it to the vice-postulator for the cause of the uncanonized person.

I find that usually Mary leaves a calling card… whether it’s a voice on the car radio, a prayer card showing up somewhere, or just noticing an icon somewhere I’d never noticed it before.

It sounds pretty corny, but it’s true.

I would imagine saints that you pray to will do the same.

With that in mind, I try to remember Jesus and Thomas - blessed are those who believe without the signs.

I would not encourage people to believe that the Blessed Mother leaves “calling cards”. You may find that in your life but it is NOT a position that the church takes.

I also do not feel that the Saints will do the same generally speaking. There are a few that promise roses etc.

But when you encourage people to think they are going to get a sign, especially those with weak and fragile faith from the start - and no sign appears - then you set them up to possibly think their prayers were not heard or not answered.

Are we to expect signs? We already know that all prayers are answered. That is the gift of faith that the church teaches. I do not believe we should not be expecting calling cards from God’s humble servants. If they arrive, that is a special blessing.

Maybe it’s best to just leave it with your last statement. Blessed are those that believe with no signs.
 
I just remembered why I quit posting on this website until recently.
