Do you pray with your spouse?

DH & I signed up for a 6 week class for married couples sponsored by the diocese thinking it was like a Marraige Encounter, but instead is about couple prayer. It’s called “For Two…” Couple Prayer. Has anyone hear of this? Is it Catholic? We’ve only been to one class, and DH and I are back-and-forth in wondering if it’s Catholic or Protestant.

Anyway, the idea of DH & I praying together has never crossed our minds before. We each pray separately, daily, and with the kids as a family, every morning, every evening, and before dinner. Obviously praying with your spouse can only reap benefits.

I’m just wondering how many people on catholic.com pray with their spouse.

Thanks!

My DH and I pray together daily. We always make it a point to set aside some time to do this after the kids are asleep and before we go to sleep. We do say prayers together as a family and individually as well. I think that it is very important for spouses to pray together.

I’m not familiar with the particular program you mentioned, though.

When I first started dating my wife she called me late one night and asked “Will you pray with me?” We said an Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory be and offered up some personal intentions. That’s when I knew for sure that she was the one for me! From that day on we would call each other before bed time and pray together. On our wedding day, after the reception, we went to the nearby perpetual adoration chapel and spent time with Jesus before returning to our hotel.

We have a small apartment, but the first thing we did was make a prayer corner with icons, Bible, prayer books, Rosaries, candles, and other sacramentals. This is the heart of our home where we go to pray.

I recommend keeping it short and simple to start–have a structure. This helps you keep up the routine even when you’re tired or don’t feel like it. Be flexible too–add prayers and intentions when the Holy Spirit inspires.

May God bless your efforts!

My wife and myself pray together every morning. We also pray the Rosary together just about every morning and also before Sunday Mass. Praying together is a wonderful experience.

We pray together several times a day and as a whole family at bedtime.

This is such an amazing blessing to all of us. I can’t begin to explain it, it must be experienced.

Blessings as you journey down this great road together.

My husband and I always pray before eating. We pray that prayer many of us learned in Catholic school, “Bless us, O Lord, and these, they gifts…” He seems more comfortable with these structured prayers than “free-form.” Lately, though I’ve suggested adding things at the end. First, I printed a large copy of the “Angelus.” I hung it on the wall, and we began to pray it after grace. After a month or two, when we had it memorized, I printed a copy of the “Magnificat,” which we prayed through Advent. For Christmas season, we’ve been praying “Benedictus.” I would love to do more together besides Sunday Mass, but so far, that’s about it.

Ooo. That sounds like a great idea. 👍

Marriage IS a prayer…yes you will only reap benefits and gain sensitivity toward each other if you hold hands and pray together.
