Pre-V.2 Little Office sung audio?

I just ordered the new Baronius Press Little Office of the Blessed Virgin Mary. I am wondering if there are any CD’s or online resources that have the Pre-Vatican II Little Office in song/chant.

Any ideas?
 
Good question. I just bought this prayerbook, and it is amazing. The chants are not too difficult. The men’s gregorian chant group I am in could easily record this on mp3’s. I may bring it up to the director.

I just received mine in the mail yesterday. Its a great book; wonderfully made, and the office itself is beautiful. The only quirk I had about it was that I thought the ribbon markers could have been a little wider and a little longer. Also, I’m surprised that the Latin text does not contain any accent marks.

I don’t know anything at all about chant, other than it sounds heavenly. If your group records this Office and makes it available to us in mp3 format, (clearing throat)…I got dibs.

I kinda like the petite ribbons. It’s almost quaint. The cardstock is thick, and the gilding is nice. The only problems I have are that there are a couple of misprints/typos. Nothing major.

As for the Latin not having accent marks, Latin is like English in that accent marks are not usually expressed in written texts. They are sometimes included in chants where words are broken up in order that the schola can place the accent on the proper syllable, but in plain text, the rules for accents are pretty regular.

If we record, I will try to remember this thread and let you know. Most likely, we’d place it on the website for free download.

I’m comparing it to my Angelus Press Missal. All the Latin text in the Missal has accent marks. The ribbons in my Missal are just a tiny bit wider, but much longer. They hang a good 2 1/2" - 3" out from the bottom of the Missal. But, I feel like I’m making too big a deal out of it. Bottom line: the Baronius Little Office is sweet; all the way around. Much better than the other version I have which is based on the newer Little Office.

edit: I just looked at Baronius’ homepage. They are saying that their Roman Breviary is in the final typesetting stage. I can’t wait!

I’ve been using the Baronius LOBVM since it came out and love it, but kept hoping for the chants in it to be available. If your group is willing to do that you’d be an answer to my prayers because then the praying the hours will be even more meaningful than they are now.

We have a packed schedule for the Spring, but we may be able to tackle this after Easter. Lift up a Lenten prayer for the Brazos Valley Schola Cantorum (my schola) to get this done.
 
I have discussed this with our schola director. It is in line with our goals to form an online database. I will have more information this summer. I have contacted Baronius, and they are interested. We have also contacted musicians who specialize in chant notation to help us with some tricky parts. Multiple websites have offered to host this project once it is completed.

So, all in all, things are underway. Please pray for the completion of this task.

I’m reviving this thread to say that our schola director has agreed to start recording the chants from the Little Office this year. We are in contact with Baronius Press and hope to start recording this Spring. The chants will be free for download when they are done.

I will use this thread to keep up on the progress. It may take up to 2 years to get all of it recorded, but things are coming together nicely.
 
Thank you so much, Windmill. This is wonderful news! I won’t post any more inquiries but will be waiting and praying for the completion of the project. Thanks for the offer to post the progress from time to time. That will be appreciated. Please extend to the director the gratitude of myself and all others also waiting for the chants.
 
UPDATE***

We’ve acquired all the materials we need, we have started learning the chants, and we are in the process of acquiring a recording/mastering group. The recording location is already picked out. Baronius is notified and in full cooperation.

Has Baronius informed you that they just released the second edition of the LOBVM? It corrects a couple of chants and added a couple new ones.

The schola’s site appears to be gone. Has it perhaps been disbanded? If so then I am naturally disappointed that the LOBVM chants did not come to fruition. Nevertheless, I am appreciative that you were making the attempt. Thank you.

We are putting this on the back burner as the demand for our group has sky rocketed.

Mixed blessings. I am considering doing an informal recording of these chants. It’s not rocket science.

In the meantime, here’s a great recording of the LOBVM Vespers with pipe organ accompaniment (mp3’s from album for small purchase fee of $7)

A bit of a stupid question, but—

Does this have people singing as well? I’ve heard Dupre’s 15 Versets but as a completely organ piece. `
