I know fasting in the Catholic Church today is mainly a call to eat less than we would on a normal day. Or one meal with 2 lighter meals. Was this the norms for fasting before Vatican II or did this change after? Curious…

The 1917 Code said that the fast was set by local custom - in North America, that generally took the shape of one normal meal (usually the midday meal) and two collations. Collations were just enough to keep your strength throughout the day, and together they were not to equal the size of the principal meal.

Keep in mind that this happened throughout Lent - so every day from Ash Wednesday to Holy Saturday (except Sundays). Meat could only be had at the principal meal, but there was no meat on Friday and Saturday (in addition to Ash Wednesday and the Lenten Ember Days). It’s a great practice, but it’s tough! I’ll be trying to keep it again this year.

Sorry to use your topic for my question, but it reminded me of lent.

I need a link to a novena for the lenten season, please
