I am preparing for marriage this June, and our priest recently gave me the “Together for Life” book, to help us choose the readings, plan the Mass/Rite of Marriage, etc. I sort of lean traditional, so I was looking at my grandmother’s pre-Vatican II Missal, so I could see which readings were part of the old Mass (fortunately, both the Gospel and the Epistle are options for the Ordinary Form, and there is a Responsorial Psalm which is also the psalm which forms the basis of the Gradual and the Tract - though, I don’t much care for the substitution of “Yahweh” for “the Lord” in the newer translation…)

I also took a look at the old Rite of Marriage (which, apparently, was supposed to take place immediately prior to the Mass), and both my (non-Catholic) fiancee and myself prefer it to the options set out in the newer book. So, my question is, is it possible to have the Ordinary Form nuptual Mass, with the pre-Vatican II Rite of Marriage?

Before anyone suggests “just get married in an Extraordinary Form Mass,” our parish Priest went to the seminary after Vatican II, only celebrates the O.F. Mass, and would be deeply hurt if I did not have him perform the Mass (plus, the closest E.F. Mass is about 50 miles away).

The main thing that I can see as complicating this is that the nuptial blessing is sort-of linked with the marriage rite and vows and so it seems improper to have the nuptial blessing in the OF but the marriage rite in the EF.

You could also consider the rite of marriage outside Mass. The only thing is that the Epistle and Gospel were added in 1964/5 to that rite. I’m not sure whether theoretically you could add them BEFORE the prayers given in the Rituale/Collectio Rituum so that they would be technically outside the rite. The rites do allow for ‘admonitions’ to be given at that point.

James,

I believe the answer to your question would be yes. At least, I would say that if this is what you would like, you can certainly request that the priest do it this way. The two forms, ordinary and extraordinary cannot be mixed, but in this case, the marriage rite is one “event” and the nuptial Mass is another–even though one immediately follows the other, and they are obviously linked. Here’s what Pope Benedict says in his Motu Proprio:

Art. 5 §3. For faithful and priests who request it, the pastor should also allow celebrations in this extraordinary form for special circumstances such as marriages, funerals oroccasional celebrations, e.g. pilgrimages.

Note that he says “should allow” not simply “may allow” which implies that the priest has a certain obligation to do so if requested.

I’m saying this because you specifically asked about the marriage before and not during the Mass.

I would caution you though, that while I’m saying that *I think *this can be done, and you can certainly make the request, I cannot say with certainty that the priest will do it. My opinion: go ahead and ask.

I’m hesitating myself on that point as well, but I think it could be done. If the Mass were to be considered a “Mass for special needs or occasions” it might be possible.

That’s what the OP thought of as well, the marriage outside of Mass. That way the readings of the Mass itself could still be those from pre-1964, because those readings are still an option in the new lectionary. To do the readings during the marriage rite, and the same ones again during Mass would be redundant and repetative.

Overall, I think this one is possible…

To clarify, what I meant was the 1961/2 rite from the Collectio/Rituale but the one designed for features such as the (formerly indulted) Nuptial Blessing extra missam . This would be instead of and not in addition to a Mass. The only thing is that it would be very short and shorn of much solemnity. Another alternative would be not to have a Nuptial Blessing :(.

Now I’m confused. You’re asking about “instead of and not in addition to a Mass” but your original post asked about the ordinary form of Mass.

I thought that you want to have the 1961/2 (whatever year) form for the rite of marriage, but followed by a novus ordo Mass. Am I misunderstanding what you’re asking? Please clarify because we’d like to help here but I for one don’t get the question.

Actually, I’m not the OP…😃
