f you’ve ever wondered why some Christian preachers must hopscotch the globe in fancy private jets, it’s in part so that they don’t have to get on commercial planes with the “demon” common folk.
Preachers from the so-called “prosperity gospel” movement, Kenneth Copeland and Jesse Duplantis, tried to explain their controversial need for their followers to give up their hard-earned dollars so they can fly in luxury in an interview posted Wednesday.
“Now Oral [Hatch] used to fly airlines,” Copeland explained. “But even back then it got to the place where it was agitating his spirit, people coming up to him, he had become famous, and they wanted him to pray for them and all that. You can’t manage that today, this dope-filled world, and get in a long tube with a bunch of demons.”
Copeland then pointed out he could “scratch my flying itch” by riding around in his single-engine, open-cockpit plane.
It gets worse…

Televangelists are on the way out. They better enjoy their money while they can.

You paint with a broad brush. What about televangelists such as Bishop Robert Barron and Father Mitch Pacwa? They continue the traditions set by Mother Angelica, Father Benedict Groeschel, the Venerable Fulton J. Sheen.

Apple, meet orange.
:banghead:

“Televangelist” in the modern sense of the word refers to fringe preachers with no visible denomination behind them (or loosely affiliated) whose primary ministry is TELEVISION. They make oodles of cash and spend most of their air time begging for money, selling prosperity and miracle water.
To even remotely imply a comparison with EWTN or Catholic programing is ludicrous. I would not even insult mainline Protestants with that comparison.

Ah, so Catholics are not true televangelists?

Better tell the following Catholic sources.

Dynamic Catholic Institute
Dynamic Catholic Institute:
Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen is arguably the most beloved Catholic televangelist and radio personality of modern times.
Catholic Herald, the UK’s best Catholic weekly
Catholic Herald:
I spoke to Bonnie days before the Vatican announced that its theologians had approved the miracle that occurred in her life, after she sought the intercession of Archbishop Fulton Sheen, the charismatic American televangelist who died in 1979.
National Catholic Register (a division of EWTN)
National Catholic Register:
The beloved U.S. televangelist’s cause passed several major hurdles this year with the approval of a miracle by both medical advisers in March and theologians in June.
Angelus, official paper of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles

Angelus:
Say the word “televangelist” in a crowded room and you might just as well have yelled “shark” at the beach. The word didn’t always evoke such a near universal response of disdain … until Fulton Sheen.

When it comes to televangelism, Sheen was pure lightning in a bottle. There were few people who followed him who could master his ability to convey the message of the Gospel via the medium of television.

Actually, people have been using whatever medium has been available to them for 2,000 years, whether it was the street, the printing press, radio or broadcast television. The casualty list of men and women who preceded and have followed Archbishop Fulton Sheen is long and represents many a cautionary tale.

The lack of a pop culture televangelist equal (with maybe one or two exceptions) to Fulton Sheen is equal parts the archbishop’s unique and exemplary gifts and the shortcomings of his rivals.

Does that mean these preachers don’t want to mix with US???🤷
Sounds like it to me 👍 Mind you, on the great plus side, it leaves a seat in the plane free for the likes of Fr Wade Menzies and others like him. I think Fr Wade said that he rarely spent an air journey without a fallen away Catholic engaging him in a faith discussion.

Actually, this raises an interesting question in my mind. Does anyone know of a sustained, Catholic-based critique of Word of Faith theology?

So many fallen away, so few flights! 👍

I shared a seat with a Catholic businessman from our small city a few months ago on a flight. We had a very polite discussion. Since then I have been on CAF and feel I have gained valuable insight by looking through the lenses of Catholic belief. Thank you all for being patient with me!

Today I am flying again later, I hope I sit beside a Catholic priest, especially if he is like a priest that I am friends with; sincere, open minded, kind and does not assume a level of superiority.

One thing I’ve learned is clergy of ANY denomination never want to ‘talk shop’ while they are on holiday.
A priest might be in plainclothes. 😉

I have several friends who are priests. They may travel in “plainclothes” but have not passed up a chance to bring a fallen away Christian back to God. Personally, I don’t either. I carry my Rosary and Catholic prayer book along with a book that I read to help enlighten me and deepen my faith. Most people at the airport or on the airplane give me a wide berth, some glance curiously, and a few engage me about my faith. Remember that we sheep should remember the voice of our Shepherd and follow Him. God wants all of us to bring others to Him.👍

I don’t know. They have been around for a long time. They might just revamp themselves.
Very possible. With the net, anyone can become a spiritual leader so we may very well see millions of new “pastors” soon!
