One last comment from me on this is to recommend the ponderous work of Garrigou Lagrange titled PREDESTINATION.

The reason is because if you believe in the concept of election by God, you cannot also hold to salvation by grace and works, at least not in any consistent way.

Works of the Elect are predestined and their effecting by the Elect is by grace. All is grace including works for without Him we can do nothing. Man is saved by grace, unmerited, freely given grace. This is the constant teaching of the Catholic Church…Works are there and are rewarded by God, but those works are done in Christ by His grace, even the working of our will in doing good works is by His grace for God is All in all, working, as St. Augustine says, both the will and the way of salvation. It is now, not we that live but Christ lives in us. From God, the Supreme Good, all good comes forth. Salvation is by grace alone, unmerited gift from God…Catholic Teaching. Nothing that comes from us merits eternal life. Eternal life is the gift of God. Prove yourself one of God’s Elect by your fruits.

Election by God is not a concept but a divinely revealed truth of the Catholic Faith.

Although man can do naturally good acts without grace yet does not merit from it.

From Fundamentals of Catholic Dogma:
  • For the performance of a morally good action Sanctifying Grace is not required. (De fide.)
  • The Grace of faith is not necessary for the performance of a morally good action. (Sent. certa.)
  • Actual Grace is not necessary for the performance of a morally good action. (Sent. certa.)
  • For every salutary act internal supernatural grace of God (gratia elevans) is absolutely necessary. (De fide.)

Good clarification. Thank you. I was speaking of salutary acts. I appreciate the distinction.
When I was writing I recalled the canons of Trent spoke of the teaching as you quoted from Ott, I imagine. But I should have made explicit that I was speaking of salutary works.
