Socrates4Jesus,

actually the Deut. passage reveals many criteria for the prophet, 2 of them are predictions and miracles in addition to talking to God face to face…the Quran is clear he performed no miracle, and he took revelations via an angel…as to predictions, there aren’t any in the Quran as well as far as i know…you find some in hadith . Whether they are predictions or common sense as many say, it is open to discussion as i haven’t explored this topic in a great deal.

Thank you for answering my questions. Looking at one of the passages you mentioned in context i believe Muslims would have a difficult time proving Moses (pbuh) was predicting Muhammad (pbuh):

17 The LORD said to me: “What they say is good. 18 I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their brothers; I will put my words in his mouth, and he will tell them everything I command him. 19 If anyone does not listen to my words that the prophet speaks in my name, I myself will call him to account. 20 But a prophet who presumes to speak in my name anything I have not commanded him to say, or a prophet who speaks in the name of other gods, must be put to death.” 21 You may say to yourselves, “How can we know when a message has not been spoken by the LORD ?” 22 If what a prophet proclaims in the name of the LORD does not take place or come true, that is a message the LORD has not spoken. That prophet has spoken presumptuously. Do not be afraid of him. Here, Moses (pbuh) is making the incredible claim that the only way to know the true prophets from the impostors is this: The true prophets will predict the future with 100% accuracy 100% of the time.

I have read an English translation of the Quran and have found no such predictions. In contrast, the writers of the Bible made many hundreds of such predictions of the future, none of which has been demonstrated as false. Did i miss something in the Quran?

**Prophet Muhammad predicted the defeat of his opponents (the idolaters) of Makkah. That came true after a struggle of 23 years.

The persians had defeated the Romans in battles. The Idolators of Makkah were happy because they had more love for the persian fire worshippers, and had some hatred for the christians.

IT was revealed to the prophet Muhammad that the Romans will be victorious in a few (3 to 9) years. That is what happened. The Romans defeated the Persians. (Chapter 30 of Quran, first verses)

Now about Jesus. He had promised the 12 disciples the keys to the 12 thrones of heavens. One of those disciples (Judas Ascrutie) reported him to the enemies and got him arrested. So where were the 12 thrones gone. The promise became untrue.

There are a few other things of like nature in the bible which could be sited as examples.**

I never saw anything in the Bible about 12 thrones.

Also, Douglas MacAurthur told the people of the Philipines that he would return, and he did. George Patton predicted the movement of Rommel’s Afrika Corps correctly. Were they both prophets as well? Joe Namith predicted a win in Super Bowl III and was correct. The Greatest of Boxer of all time made many predictions that were correct. He was a prophet for sure.

There are some, but they are in the nature of self-fulfilling prophecies.

Some muslims will argue that in the bible speaks of the coming of a comforter he is refering to Muhammud. Most Christans believe the “comforter” or Parcelet to be the Holy spirit but some Muslims believe that because the word Parcelet some how translates to truth and because one of Muhammud’s names is “ahamed’, which means truth teller” or trustworthy one", some Muslims believes that Jesus is refering to Muhammud.
The comforter is not Mohammed it is the Holy Spirit. John 14:26

26 But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.
KJV

The coming of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) was foretold by Prophet Jesus (pbuh) in the Bible.

Our Lord Jesus predicted the coming of Mohammed here:

Matthew 7
15 Beware of false prophets, who come to you in the clothing of sheep, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.

Matthew 24
11 And many false prophets shall rise, and shall seduce many.

St. Paul predicted Mohammed’s coming here:

Galatians 1
8 But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach a gospel to you besides that which we have preached to you, let him be anathema.

Sincerely,

De Maria

ok i thought they’re in hadith not Quran…thank you for the info…yes i read about the self-fulfilling arguments and being attributed to common sense, especially when one is talking about wars.

Ralphinal,

Planten is talking most probably about :

Jesus said to them, "Amen, I say to you that you who have followed me, in the new age, when the Son of Man is seated on his throne of glory, will yourselves sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.
Matthew 19:28

Planten, they chose another disciple after Judas’ betrayal and remained 12.

And the name of the person who replaced Judas Iscariot was Mathias.

Hi

I think what Planten has suggested, for that the following is more suitable:

**Luke 22:28-30 **
28You are those who have stood by me in my trials. 29And I confer on you a kingdom, just as my Father conferred one on me, 30so that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom and sit on thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.

As per NTBible ( not as per Jesus or as per Quran), according to Luke when the promise was made to the twelve, at that time, later they deserted Jesus in his trials and hence did not accomplish the condition “You are those who have stood by me in my trials” so neither that promise/prophecy was fullfilled at that time nor it is possible now.In my humble opinion, Jesus is not to come physically and literally. His coming has happened in the form of the PromisedMessiah 1838-1908.

Thanks

Thanks. Reference please? I thought the new twelveth one was paul (Saul of Tarsus).
"In those days Peter stood up among the brethren, the company of persons was in all about a hundred and twenty, and said, “Brethren, the Scripture had to be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit spoke beforehand by the mouth of David *, concerning Judas who was guide to those who arrested Jesus. For he was numbered among us, and was allotted his share in this ministry.”

“So one of the men who have accompanied us during all the time that The Lord Jesus went in and out among us, beginning from the baptism of John until the day when He was taken up from us - one of these men must become with us a witness to His resurrection.”

“And they put forward two, Joseph called Barsabbas, who was surnamed Justus, and Matthias. And they prayed and said, “Lord, Who knowest the hearts of all men, show which one of these two Thou hast chosen to take the place in this ministry and apostleship from which Judas turned aside, to go to his own place.” And they cast lots for them, and the lot fell on Matthias; and he was enrolled with the eleven apostles.” (Acts 1)*

Acts Of Apostles 1
23 And they appointed two, Joseph, called Barsabas, who was surnamed Justus, and Matthias. 24 And praying, they said: Thou, Lord, who knowest the hearts of all men, shew whether of these two thou hast chosen, 25 To take the place of this ministry and apostleship, from which Judas hath by transgression fallen, that he might go to his own place. 26 And they gave them lots, and the lot fell upon Matthias, and he was numbered with the eleven apostles.

It has been awhile since i’ve read the Bible from cover to cover, so please point out my error if i’m wrong, but i can recall no passage that indicates doing a miracle is a requirement to be a prophet. For example, many Christians and Jewish people consider David to be a prophet, but there is no indication from the Bible, that i can recall, that he did any miracles.

Regarding predictions of the future, i have found none in the Quran, either. Ahhh, if only we had a thoughtful Muslim to confirm this.

I consider these miracles:

As a child he killed a lion with a simple stone.
Later he killed a giant with the same procedure.

1 Kings 17
37 And David said: The Lord who delivered me out of the paw of the lion, and out of the paw of the bear, he will deliver me out of the hand of this Philistine. And Saul said to David: Go, and the Lord be with thee.

When he was surrounded by those who wanted to kill him, God enabled him to get away:

1 Kings 19
10 And Saul endeavoured to nail David to the wall with his spear. And David slipt away out of the presence of Saul: and the spear missed him, and was fastened in the wall, and David fled and escaped that night.

1 Kings 23
*26 And Saul went on this side of the mountain: and David and his men were on the other side of the mountain: and David despaired of being able to escape from the face of Saul: and Saul and his men encompassed David and his men round about to take them. **27 And a messenger came to Saul, saying: Make haste to come, for the Philistines have poured in themselves upon the land. *28 Wherefore Saul returned, leaving the pursuit of David, and went to meet the Philistines

And then God would place his enemies at his feet:

1 Kings 24 :1 *Then David went up from thence, and dwelt in strong holds of Engaddi. 2 And when Saul was returned from following the Philistines, they told him, saying: Behold, David is in the desert of Engaddi. **3 Saul therefore took three thousand chosen men out of all Israel, and went out to seek after David, and his men, even upon the most craggy rocks, which are accessible only to wild goats. *4 And he came to the sheepcotes, which were in his way. And there was a cave, into which Saul went, to ease nature: now David and his men lay hid in the inner part of the cave. 5 And the servants of David said to him: Behold the day, of which the Lord said to thee: I will deliver thy enemy unto thee, that thou mayest do to him as it shall seem good in thy eyes. Then David arose, and secretly cut off the hem of Saul’s robe.

Sincerely,

De Maria

There is an amazing prophecy in the Qur’an concerning the eventual fate of Abu Lahab.

This man Abu Lahab, an uncle of the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), used to hate Islam so much that he would go after the Prophet wherever he goes to humiliate him. If he saw the Prophet talking to strangers, he used to wait till he finishes and then ask them: what did Mohammed tell you? If he said it’s white then it’s in reality black and if he said it’s night then it’s day. He meant to falsify all what the Prophet says and to make people suspicious about it. And 10 years before the death of Abu Lahab, a sura was inspired to the Prophet, named “Al-Masad”.

"Perish the two hands of Abu Lahab and perish he! His wealth and his children will not benefit him! He will be burnt in a Fire of blazing flames!" [Qur’an, 111:1-3]

This sura tells that Abu Lahab will go to Hell. In other words, it says that Abu Lahab will not convert to Islam.

During 10 years, Abu Lahab could have said: “Mohammed is saying that I will not become a Muslim and that I will go to the Hell fire, but I’m telling you now that I want to convert to Islam and become a Muslim. What do you think about Mohammed now? Is he saying the truth or no? Does his inspiration come from God?”.

But Abu Lahab did not do that at all although he was disobeying the Prophet in all matters, but not in this one. In other words, it was as if the Prophet (pbuh) was giving Abu Lahab a chance to prove him wrong! But he did not do that and during 10 whole years, he did not convert to Islam and did not even pretend to be a Muslim!!

Throughout 10 years, he had the chance to destroy Islam in 1 minute! But this did not happen because those are not the words of Mohammed (pbuh) but the words of God who knows what’s hidden and knows that Abu Lahab will not become a Muslim.

How can the Prophet (pbuh) know that Abu Lahab will prove what is said in that Sura if this was not inspiration from Allah? How can he be sure throughout 10 whole years that what he has (the Qur’an) is true if he did not know that it’s inspiration from Allah??

For a person to take such a risky challenge, this has only one meaning: that this prophecy regarding Abu Lahab remaining a disbeliever till his death 10 years later, can only come from God.

we are talking about Moses and the prophet like unto him. We read about Moses in Deuteronomy 34:10

And there arose not a prophet since in Israel like unto Moses, whom the LORD knew face to face,In all the signs and the wonders, which the LORD sent him to do in the land of Egypt to Pharaoh, and to all his servants, and to all his land…

Hamba, can you prove to anyone that Abu Laham is in hell because he did not convert?

first, the Quran only says that Abu Lahab will go to hell. It does not say what you claim . It does not say that “Abu Lahab will never become a Muslim”…it is understandable that Muhammad would compose a sura condemning him to hell because of his anger about Abu Lahab’s resistence and mockery. But a prophecy is something tested and verified. We cannot test in any way whether Abu Lahab is indeed in hell. Hence this statement has very little value in testing whether the Quran is of divine origin.

Besides, not all muslims are going to heaven anyway.

I personally fail to see any evidence in this sura that would support the divine origin of the Quran. On the contrary, it is evidence that Muhammad’s personal feelings of anger against Abu Lahab have found their way into what is claimed to be the eternal word of God.
