For weekdays during Lent, is the preface proper or can the priest choose from one of the four lenten prefaces?

The Missal, IIRC, directs the priest to choose from one of the four prefaces of Lent on weekdays in Lent. A Lenten weekday has a proper Collect, Prayer over the Offerings, and Prayer after Communion, but not a proper Preface.

The only thing I have to add to what Gorgias said is that on days of fasting Preface III or IV should be used. Otherwise, any of the prefaces can be chosen for a Mass during the week in Lent.

It’s actually printed right in the Roman Missal. Each weekday of Lent, following the Prayer Over the Offerings, there’s a rubric which tells the priest which prefaces are available.

For most of the weekdays of Lent, any of the 4 Lenten prefaces* may be used.

During the 5th week, Preface I of the Passion is required*.

On Monday, Tuesday & Wednesday (and Thursday morning) of Holy Week, Preface II of the Passion is required*.

  • *Edit: * Strictly speaking, a common preface is permitted, even Eucharistic Prayer IV, which has its own proper preface can be used. That option is available, so a priest who chooses to do it would still be making a licit choice.
