I was taught to receive the Host on the hand. I occasionally have tried to receive on the tongue, but its hard to change years of habit.

Occasionally when the chalice is availible I’ll receive the Precious Blood under that form. I’ve never had the opportunity to receive by intinction.

I’m confused by the question. Are you talking out one’s personal preference or the Church’s preference? If the latter, the norm is communion on the tongue with the option of receiving in the hand (in the United States and a few other countries that have asked for that permission).

My preferred way is in the hand (both in the Latin Rite and in the Melkite Church which is part of the Byzantine Rite).

Self-intinction is not inVALID, but it is certainly illicit.

Unless you are a priest . . . then do what you like, Father!

Sorry about that. Self-intinction does not invalidate the Sacrament (the Holy Eucharist is still Jesus Christ Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity) but the method is illicit.

You can find the practice (self-intinction) condemned in #104 of Redemptionis Sacramentum:

I always receive Holy Communion on tongue followed by drinking the Precious Blood. But since I moved to a new parish I am kinda forced to receive the Holy Communion on hand - reason? That doughy bread that is used for Consecration and broken into gabazilion of pieces for the Communion (it takes them forever to do that - sometimes I think it would be much easier to use regular hosts). Has anyone run into a similar situation? What did you do?

I prefer to receive the Eucharist in a manner approved of by the Church.

As president of the International Intinction Fan Club, I voted for intinction!

Well I take on the tongue and then do a bow before taking God’s blood. Just a side note out of the different options you gave you only used the term precious blood once and the rest of the time referred to Our Eucharistic Lord as the “host” or the “consecrated wine” perhaps in the future you can be a bit more carefull. I know its a bit meticulous but in these times we must make our position clear.

Deacon Ed,

I should’ve been more specific. I was going for personal preference. As far as I know every choice I put forth except for the one calling for self-intinction are equally allowable in the church.

I put the self-intinction choice in there, however, because I’ve noticed quite a few people do it from time to time, and during a trip abroad to Hong Kong a couple years back it was the most common method of receiving communion (might’ve had something to do with the SARS scare).

I admit I was a little loose with the terminology, I should’ve used consistent terminology throughout.

Thanks!

I have great respect for people who receive on the tongue as a sign of reverence for the Eucharist.

Personally, I’m just not comfortable with it for myself. However, I do take issue with people who think it is irreverent not to receive on the tongue. Following the Theology of the Body themed analogy between the Eucharist and consummating a marriage, doing so would be like not kissing beforehand I guess. I doubt, too, that Jesus hand-fed himself to his apostles at the Last Supper. Maybe eventually I will change my mind. I have watched my mom grow more and more devout and traditional (would NEVER have called her progressive in the first place, but still the change is obvious), and she once said she didn’t want to receive on the tongue because as an EMHC she thought it was awkward. She now receives on the tongue almost exclusively.

I will probably try to attend a parish where my future children will be introduced first to the practice of receiving on the tongue so they are comfortable with it, but let them make their own decision. Let us not forget that the important thing is reverence for the Eucharist, and how one receives Jesus may reflect that reverence in different ways.

great thread, thanks!

When I was in R.C.I.A., '99-'02, we were instructed only in hand receipt.
I now receive on the tongue only - from the priest.
I hand receive from the EMCs only…
I always receive the Precious Blood.

And yet ANOTHER thread where we can beat this dead horse some more.

I take it on the tongue usually, but sometimes there is a little short lady . . . (what’s the correct term for “handing them out” ? ) and I don’t want to make her reach for my mouth, and I don’t want to stoop, so I take it in the hand.

I prefer intinction, performed by a priest or a deacon, as is done in my Melkite church.

I used to receive in the hand but since I have really gotten into studying the Faith, I now receive on the tongue only.

Receiving the Holy Communion on the tongue alone is enough for me 😃 .Intinction - priest, deacon or EMHC dipping the Host into the Consecrated Wine is also acceptable but not a must 🙂 .
However dipping one’s own Host into the precious Blood for Intinction or receiving the Host in the hand i do frown 😦 on because of the danger of the sacred species being profaned.
:blessyou:

For once we are in full agreement Michael. This is the umpteenth thread asking people to state their preference for reception of Holy Communion. Perhaps we should limit it to once a year.
