One is surely allowed to use measures to prevent ill-health? Otherwise, why are we allowed to stick a needle into a helpless baby (evil) to prevent MMR (good).
The only thing a condom prevents is pregnany or the spread of STD’s. If you need a hormone therapy, you would need it regardless of having sex or not. Abstaining would not solve the problem because it is hormonal. Pregnacy and STD’s can be prevented by abstaining. Poking a kid to vaccinate them is not something that can be avoided it is part of the treatment. It’s not the same. One is surely allowed to use measures to prevent ill-health? It’s not just about avoding sin.I am glad that it is not as much of a problem as it used to be!I hope that she doesn’t get any bouts of BV this time around. Abstinence may be the best protocol if you are 100% adamant on avoiding potential sin, but I know how tough it can be during pregnancy when you just crave that physical bond sometimes.
You sound like a strong couple!
God Bless,

AgreedIt’s not just about avoding sin.
There is also good, scientific reason for abstaining. Condoms are not 100% effective at preventing things like this.
People treat sex as if it were eating, sleeping and going to the bathroom. You won’t die if you have to give it up for an extended period.AgreedWhy take the risk to your wifes health and your unborn child’s health.
I wasn’t saying that it was just about avoiding sin:shrug:… and i agree that condoms are not totally effective at preventing BV, there are multiple factors that contribute to it. Spermicides, ejaculate, and artificial lubrication seem to have an impact on the bacteria growth, but it is more complex than just one of these things being the sole cause. It’s not just about avoding sin.

Yes but all of those things can be avoided by simply abstaining until the baby arrives.I wasn’t saying that it was just about avoiding sin:shrug:… and i agree that condoms are not totally effective at preventing BV, there are multiple factors that contribute to it. My first instinct is since she is already pregnant when you would be using them that they would be ok, but I am still learning a lot about NFP, so I would talk to a priest and/or an NFP instructor. At this time it is not thought that men can carry BV so you are not infected. The cause is that during pregnancy a woman’s body reacts differently to semen and her feminine secretions change more drastically after intercourse. To avoid this change you might try condoms during pregnancy.
What are your thoughts?
I don’t want to make her keep having to go through this “dangerous” treatment but I also would like to stay within the Catholic teaching that birth control is morally wrong.
Thanks so much
I am not trying to put you down, but you are putting your sex life over this pregnancy and that is not right. You should abstain - not becuase I think using condoms in this situation is wrong, but because she is high risk and you should not be having sex at all. trust me, I had a baby at 28 weeks and he spent months in the NICU - and that was even with abstaining from sex. it’s not worth it to see your child struggling just to breath and not die. Put sex on the back burner until the baby is here. You don’t want to beat yourself up over the incubator of your 2 pound infant wondering why you put 5 minutes of pleasure over the best start for him/her and wondering if your baby will even make it, and if so, will it have any permanent birth defects.Thank you all for your responses. I do plan on talking with a priest about the matter but that may be a while so I thought I would see what you all thought.
With the last pregnancy she only got BV once so it might just be a body changing thing that will/did work itself out over time.
I absolutely place the live and well being of my wife and child most important. I am the first to admit that I am selfish and that I do enjoy sex and it is fun but I am also no stranger to long times of abstinence in marriage.
Thank you for the comment about the lubrication on the condom, I hadn’t thought about that either.
I think that since she only had BV once during the last pregnancy we are going to continue without condoms and see how it goes.
Thanks again
