There is great suffering in this story. I hope that she finds peace.

I agree, but I also pray for justice where justice is do. I don’t know the full facts or circumstances, but I hope this woman gets the proper treatment she deserves

This story is so bleak. I can’t help but feel sick when I think about the lifetime of guilt that that poor woman must be carrying round with her. I notice that no one seems enraged with the father’s behaviour - he seems quite content to turn his back on the situation.

I hope that this woman is judged on what she has done and what was was going on at the time, and it does not turn into a case that comes down to feelings about abortion.

It’s so depressing.

The folk on here who feel in favour of her possibly serving time in prison for this; what are your feelings about women who smoke in pregnancy? Smoking is extremely harmful for foetuses, and for the babies after they are born. What about women who don’t (not women who can’t) breastfeed, despite it being well established that breastmilk is much much healthier for babies than artificial formula? Not to mention drink and drugs in pregnancy.

Thank you.
There is a difference. 🤷 Second hand smoke is bad, but you don’t see people getting hauled away for smoking around me. This woman was trying to kill herself and the baby (or just the baby). People smoking when pregnant while being stupid are not trying to kill/hurt their baby or even hurt themselves, which is what smoking is doing.

People who are sucidial aren’t always in a right state of mind to plan very well. Some are, some aren’t. I know of people who’ve jumped off cliffs and half way down thought better of it, and ended up really quite banged up, and then regretting that they didn’t just keep going.

Some people will try, try and try.

If she really wanted to kill baby, it wouldn’t have been hard to find an abortionist to do it. Really, its not that hard. Not to mention, there’s blogs and pages on line where you can find all kinds of DIY herbal abortions, even that far into the peice.

Charging her with murder? They’ll have to prove her intent was to kill the child. I’m sure a good defence lawyer could argue that you can’t murder a non-person as the law says so often of the foetus. Manslaughter, perhaps?

Frankly, from what I’ve read about the case, she needs help, not to be prosecuted.

Actually, from my understanding of the state law, they won’t have to prove intent. It’s not like they are charging her with 1st degree murder. My understanding was that a law was passed that made it a crime to do any actions that caused the death of the fetus. Obviously, she knew if she died, the fetus would also die. Thus, she was aware of the fact and continued with her actions. She survived, which may or may not have been intended, but the unborn child did not, and for that, she should be prosecuted if she was mentally competent/aware at the time of the crime.
