Beautiful replies in here, very well crafted.

I’ll approach from a slightly different direction, simply to add force to what has already been said.

Jesus gave the Church the power to bind and loose - to declare what is bound on Earth is bound in Heaven, and to loose the same.

The Church has declared through cannonical law that marriage between Catholics is invalid unless cannonical form is observed. The Church has declared through cannonical law that marriage between Catholics who do not subsequently have sex is valid.

That means there is no marriage in God’s eyes even if you have sex before an official Catholic ceremony - even if you exchange vows privately - except under very rare (and probably impossible) conditions. Likewise, if the Church says you are married, then you are married regardless of whether you have had sex.

Lib,

I love analogies and yours is great. As an intellectual exercise, only because I want to make my analogies strong, I’d like to ask if it would be better to say that sex would be like “living in the house” period. I’m not challenging your already great set up, but as I said, I love analogies and I wonder how far this can go.

Note that if a couple has pre-marital sex and then later marry each other, they are nonetheless in an unconsummated marriage until they have intercourse again after the wedding.

I’m not sure how this fits in with the house/moving in analogy.

Rent to own?
Yeah, that’s pretty terrible humor, even if it is coming from me.
