Prep for Total Consecration: general confession?

It says that people should have a general confession when preparing for the Total Consecration. This seems to be a confession of all the sins of one’s life, even tho they have already been confessed and forgiven.

I was wondering about whether this is a good thing to do, what are the benefits, etc?

I believe that is something that needs to be answered by a spiritual director.

Why would it be a bad idea?

A good spiritual director would know how to advise if the penitent is scrupulous and have problems with a general confession.

A good spiritual director would, of course, know if it would be beneficial to the penitent.
