Preparing Spiritually for Confirmation

I didn’t know whether to put this thread in Liturgy and Sacraments or spirituality.

In what ways can we spiritually prepare in the days before confirmation?

How can we make them days of reflection and spiritual renewal?

How did you prepare for your confirmation?

Any special prayers?

In our parish we are having NET team ministries come in and give talks and a retreat to those preparing for Confirmation. The week they are here it has been worked out that they are ministering to two parishes in the area. This afternoon, after the last Mass they are presenting a retreat from 11:00 A.M. to 5:00 PM that is being attended at my parish and includes the neighboring parish Confirmation class. Our priests are involved, of course.

They are prayerful Catholics ranging in age from 18 to 28, and know how to minister to teens. They pledge approximately nine months to a year for this traveling ministry after going through a spiritual formation program.

This is the seventh year in a row that our parish has done this. They are housed by members of our parish family who drops them off in the morning and picks them up at night. They attend daily Mass and receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation while they are here. (there are about ten of them, young men and women).
 
Weds, Thurs, Fri and Sat of Holy Week, read each of the Passion accounts and ponder them.

Spend time in prayer of praise/ thanksgiving for being able to receive the sacrament.

Go to your diocese Chrism Mass if you can.

Ponder the Holy Spirit in your life up to know and pray for continued guidance.
 
I have managed to get Holy week off work for that purpose. I want to continue praying with the scriptures which I’ve started recently, and attend Mass or Adoration daily during Holy week.

I will also be taking time to examine my conscience and doing my first Confession.

Would you go a little into what you mean by praying with the scriptures? Are you referring to Lecio Divina?

Good suggestions. Does the Chrism mass only occur on Holy Thursday?
 
Hi TrueLight-

I suggest trying not to prepare for it too much. Be like Jesus in the desert for 40 days. Keep it simple. Let God talk to you, but ask Him to make your heart ready for the Holy Spirit.

Along those lines. I’m using a book called The Better Part - A Christ centred resource for personal prayer by Fr John Bartunek. I don’t yet know enough about Lectio to comment if it’s exactly the same but it is certainly similar.

Yes/No/Depends where you live.

The Chrism Mass is suppose to be done on Holy Thursday I believe, but many places will do it on the Monday of Holy Week just due to scheduling reasons.

Lectio is a certain way of praying with the Scriptures. Personally, I find it better to do it with a group because you’ll get insights you won’t get alone.

First you read a passage. You meditate on a certain phrase or word that pops out at you. You read again, and then meditate on the meaning of the passage; you sometimes use that word or phrase to “focus” the passage. You read a third time, and meditate on what you can do in your life in light of the passage; you can also vocally prayer for help to follow what was read. You read a forth time, and then you rest in the Spirit.

That’s what I’ve done when I’ve been to Lectio.
