Well hopefully God convicts him to know the truth. I will be praying for him. Keep up the fight, but his wife to be is going to probably have a better influence than you will so encourage her.

I can’t say that thsi is 100% accross the board for Presybyterians, by my grandfather was an elder in his Church, he sort of dropped away from faith when my nana died [angry at God and all].

The main differences I often heard about was how us mean Catholics don’t let men marry each other, or how we say “no abortions ever”, apparently they accept some abortions as morally allowable. The eucharist is also a special area of contention. He also says that priests should be allowed to marry et cetera.

Of course, I couldn’t tell you if his beliefs are standard of Presbyterians.

He seems to think that it’s explosively significant that yet again, a group of conservative Presbyterians dissatisfied with mainline Presbyterianism has chosen to start a new denomination rather than join one of the many conservative Presbyterian denominations already in existence.

That was discussed as an option (in many if not all churches who are planning to leave PCUSA). After a few general meetings (nationwide) last year and this year it was felt that a new denomination was best suited. ECO will have many of PCUSA confessions and order but not the “new stuff” voted in recently. There’s more I could go into about the process but don’t feel it’s necessary in this thread.

Best suited to the spirit of American denominationalism, certainly.

Not, as far as I can see, best suited to the Creeds or, for that matter, to Calvin’s ecclesiology as set forth in Institutes Bk. 4 chap. 1, or to the WCF’s affirmation of a universal visible Church.

But then, it’s none of my business telling Presbyterians how to interpret their own texts, and interpreting the Reformed tradition in an American free-church denominational direction is certainly nothing new–it’ at least as old as the Second Great Awakening.

I’m just sorry that they have chosen this particular interpretation of the Reformed tradition, both as a church historian specializing in the origins of the Reformed tradition and as a Christian who cares about the unity of the Church.
