It was the custom for the families at that time, to dedicate their first born sons to the Lord.

Is this still done? It would seem like it would be. It is Mosaic law. Thank you ahead of time for any responses.

Luke 2:23-24 New American Bible (Revised Edition) (NABRE)
23 just as it is written in the law of the Lord, “Every male that opens the womb shall be consecrated to the Lord,” 24 and to offer the sacrifice of “a pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons,” in accordance with the dictate in the law of the Lord.
Okay, I think that is our Catholic Bible (pardon me if it is not)…

A translation using “first-born” which might be more easier to understand for some of us.

New American Standard Bible (NASB)
23 (as it is written in the Law of the Lord, “Every firstborn male that opens the womb shall be called holy to the Lord”), 24 and to offer a sacrifice according to what was said in the Law of the Lord, “A pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons.”
So, this is not about Baptism and is only about the Jewish families as I would understand it.

I should have put it in the original post. Many of us who say the Rosary may already be familiar with this scripture.

Yes The Mosaic Law commanded that the firstborn son be presented at the Temple with the dove/pigeon offering and if I am not mistaken, five shekels. As for Orthodox Jews today, I don’t know.

As a male, Jesus was circumsized by the faithful priest Simeon also. This was the first shedding of The Divine Blood, His Passion began there. Every male Jewish child, must be circumsized. It is so important is is called Bris, a Yiddish term meaning Birth. It can be done in a Temple or in a home depending on the branch of Judaism one belongs to. But all Jewish people believe the Bris is a public display of initiation, just as if the child was presented before the entire congregation of all the faithful. This is where we get our Catholic idea of initiation from, our elder Jewish cousins.

You’re confusing two events:

The circumcision was performed locally (not in the Temple) 7 days after the birth.

The presentation of the first-born in the Temple was done 40 days after the birth.

Sorry, outstanding error on my part. Thank you, Dave. Age has finally caught up with me 10 years ago. The other day someone caught me with the old ‘Moses and the Ark’ trap! MD

The purification ritual for Mary and the redeeming of the first male to open the womb took place at the same time. (Luke 2:22 "When the time came for their purification, …) You can read about these laws in Lev. 12:2-6 and Ex. 13:2 & 12.
At the time of Jesus & Mary, both rites involved animal sacrifice which took place in the temple. Once the temple was destroyed in 70 A.D. my understanding is that the OT animal sacrificial offerings generally ceased since there was no place to offer them.

There is no temple now for the ceremony. So just as there is no more animal sacrifice, there is no more presentation.
