Is it possible for a spouse (who has not yet become Catholic but has attended the Catholic Church for 38 years) to present the gifts at Mass?

yes
it is also possible for others, such as visitors and guests who are not Catholic, RCIA candidates, to present the gifts.

Thank you so very much. One more question, can a person who is up in age and has been attending the Church for many years just make his profession of faith and skip all the RCIA classes?

This a decision to be made by the pastor. Someone can attend mass for a long time and still not fully understand the teachings of the Church (about what we believe, the moral code, and worship and prayer). Every effort should be made to help assess what the inquirer may already know. If there is good reason he/she cannot attend the RCIA sessions (such as poor health), the parish needs to do what it can to help prepare him/her. I’ve been told that full understanding may not be required of someone wishing to received into the Church, if full assent is given by someone in dire circumstances.

This is off subject and I apologize - but it made me remember when I was going through RCIA and one of the sponsors mentioned that at that morning’s Mass we were going to present the Gifts. All of us had horrified looks on our faces and they asked us what was wrong. We told them we didn’t know we had to bring “presents” and were afraid that now we had commited a serious sin. The sponsors gently told us what the GIFTS really are. I think they got a good laugh out of that. :doh2:

I love that. Thanks for sharing with us. I can really relate to how you felt. I remember the time our Pastor told my friend and I that we had to fill in as Altar Servers on a Holy Day of Obligation when the altar servers didn’t show up. After all these years of going to Mass we just took for granted everything that the Altar Servers do. When it was our turn we were horrified because we had no idea what we were doing. Our priest gave us some good gestures as to what to do and everything went fine but we were really nervous Nellies.
